The third Test of the Ashes series between Australia and England began in Adelaide on Wednesday, with Australia winning the toss and opting to bat first. Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, who became the most expensive player at the IPL 2026 mini-auction, endured a disappointing outing with the bat just a day after the auction.

Batting at number five, Green faced only two deliveries before being dismissed for a duck. His failure came a day after Kolkata Knight Riders secured his services for a record Rs 25.20 crore at the IPL 2026 mini-auction held in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, making him the most expensive player in IPL history and KKR’s costliest signing ever.

Green, a right-arm fast bowler and right-handed batsman, has previously showcased his all-round abilities during his stints with Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. In IPL 2023, he scored 452 runs in 16 matches for MI, including one century and two half-centuries. In the 2024 season with RCB, he scored 255 runs in 13 matches. Across 29 IPL matches, he has also picked up 16 wickets. KKR signed Green as a replacement for Andre Russell, who has retired from the IPL.

Coming back to the match, Australia finished Day 1 at 326 for 8, courtesy of a magnificent century from wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey and a fluent half-century from Usman Khawaja. Mitchell Starc remained unbeaten on 33, while Nathan Lyon was yet to score at stumps.

Australia had a shaky start opting to bat, losing openers Travis Head and Jack Weatherald with just 33 runs on the board. Marnus Labuschagne and Cameron Green were dismissed in quick succession, leaving the hosts struggling at 94 for 4.

Khawaja, batting at number four, and Carey, batting at number six, steadied the innings with a crucial 91-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Khawaja narrowly missed out on a century, getting out after scoring 82 runs off 126 balls. He was included in the playing XI after Steve Smith was ruled out due to illness shortly before the start of the Test.
