The one-off One-Day International between Ireland and England at Malahide in Ireland on Friday was called off due to incessant rain. Ireland were batting on a score of 56 for four after 18 overs, before the heavens opened up and spoilt the proceedings. Updates: Ireland vs England, one-off ODI at Malahide

The session of play was dominated by the tourists, who won the toss and elected to field. The game was expected to be an even contest due to the second-string side that England were fielding, along with Ireland’s impressive performances in the recently-concluded ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.

England decided rest several of their mainstays in order to pave way for youngsters, as well as those who had been out of the side for quite some time, such as Tim Bresnan. Five England players made their debut in the game — Jason Roy, James Vince, David Willey, Zafar Ansari and Mark Wood. Ireland, on the other hand, were once again missing out on the services of Tim Murtagh, who suffered a hamstring injury while playing for Middlesex.

Ireland got off to a slow start, with the skies appearing gloomy right from the start of the game. England skipper James Taylor decided to open the innings with Wood and Bresnan. The hosts were handed their first blow at the start of the fourth over when Paul Stirling was run-out for two. It was followed by Wood earning his maiden ODI wicket by dismissing Ireland skipper William Porterfield for seven.

Niall O’Brien and Andrew Balbirnie were later dismissed in quick dismissed, with the fourth wicket falling for 53 runs. Ed Joyce was batting on 23 off 42 balls on the other end, as Ireland were increasingly staring at a collapse, until the rains came to their rescue.

Brief scores:

Ireland 56 for 4 in 18 overs (Ed Joyce 23*; Tim Bresnan 1 for 11) vs England.
