Ishan Kishan has not been available for selection since December 2023. Over the last several weeks, there has been much conjecture about the positions of key players in Team India’s team, with one in particular, Ishan Kishan, attracting a lot of attention. Ishan has been out of play since November of last year and withdrew from the South Africa tour midway through next month, claiming mental tiredness.
Last week, India head coach Rahul Dravid was visibly upset by repeated questioning about Ishan Kishan’s absence, insisting that the youngster has to play more cricket before returning to the national squad. A few days later, a report claimed that Ishan had returned to Baroda to practice alongside the Pandya brothers, Hardik and Krunal.
Interestingly, the wicketkeeper-batsman did not declare himself available for selection for Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan responded to the incident on his official Twitter profile earlier this week, saying he was “perplexed” by the player’s absence, and it appears that the board has also taken note of the situation.
According to reports, the BCCI plans to publish a notification allowing all players to participate in the Ranji Trophy if they are not “injured.” The newspaper’s source also stated that certain players are already in “IPL mode,” which is not liked by the board.
In the next few days, all the players will be communicated by the BCCI to play for their state team in the Ranji Trophy, as long as they are not on national duty, with only those who are unfit and recovering at the NCA being granted an exemption.
Unlike Ishan, Hardik is presently recovering from an injury sustained during a 2023 World Cup match against Bangladesh. He is anticipated to return to the Indian Premier League and skipper the Mumbai Indians.
India is presently playing a five-match Test series against England, which will be the national team’s final assignment before the T20 World Cup in June. Earlier this week, the board revealed the roster for the next three Tests of the series, which included Virat Kohli’s ongoing absence (personal reasons); however, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja returned to the squad after missing the second Test due to injuries.
