Jacques Kallis has on Christmas Day December 25, 2013, announced his retirement from Test and First-Class cricket. The second Test against India in Durban beginning on Boxing Day will be the last match of Kallis’s long and illustrious career in the five-day format.
The South African is considered to be one of the greatest all-rounders in history. He has played in 165 Tests and scored 13,174 runs at an average of 55.12. He has scored 44 centuries and 58 half-centuries with a highest of 224.
Kallis’s 44 centuries is second only to Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of 51 in the list of the most hundreds in Test cricket. He has also taken 292 wickets at an average of 32.53. The right-arm fast-medium bowler has five five-wicket hauls with a best of six for 54.
He made his Test debut for South Africa in December 1995 against England, also in Durban. Another important facet of his game was his catching. Kallis has taken 199 catches in his career so far.
The Durban Test against India, starting on December 26, 2013, provides him the opportunity to become only the second out-fielder to complete 200 catches after Rahul Dravid.
