Jason Holder will become the 26th One-Day International (ODI) captain for West Indies. The match against South Africa at Durban will be his first assignment in capacity of leader. His first series is bound to be a very challenging one as South Africa are one of the most formidable ODI sides and will also have home advantage.

West Indies will hope to better their records in the format, with the ICC World Cup 2015 looming large. The Caribbean team have been in poor form in the ODIs throughout 2013. The only bright spot came in a 3-0 whitewash against a lowly-ranked Bangladesh.

Holder follows in line of some great leaders in the history of the game, including Clive Lloyd, Vivian Richards and Courtney Walsh. It will be a challenge to live up to the reputation built by those captains. Holder is just 23 years old and may attempt to bring a new brand of youthfulness to the struggling West Indian team. He was appointed as captain following the sacking of Dwayne Bravo from the position.
