The opening pair of Moeen Ali and Ian Bell put on 62 within the first nine overs, which put England in a good position early on. After a brief 30-run stand between Ian Bell and Root, Bell perished after Suranga Lakmal came back into the attack. Bell was bowled just one run short of his half-century. England skipper Eoin Morgan then joined Root at the crease. He seemed to get his form back but was dismissed for a 47-ball 27, which included a couple of boundaries and a huge six. His wicket got young James Taylor out in the middle and he was in the mood to get things going right from the first delivery. He and Root put on 98 runs off 66 deliveries to ensure that England got to a huge total. Jos Buttler, who walked in after Taylor was dismissed for 25, was hit on the head in the very first delivery. Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes made sure that England finish at 309 for 6  Buttler eventually finished with 39 off just 18 deliveries. Things ended badly for Lakmal as he was barred from bowling after he bowled two beamers in the final over of the innings. England go into the break with the momentum.
