John Hastings set the tone for the deciding One-Day International (ODI) between England and Australia by picking two early wickets of opener Alex Hales and in-form No. 3 James Taylor. England never quite recovered from there and when tail-ender Mark Wood started threatening to put on a sizeable partnership with Adil Rashid, Hastings thwarted the hopes by dismissing Wood. Hastings was given a late entry in the squad following injury to Nathan Coulter-Nile.  He failed to impress in his first outing which was the fourth ODI, but came good when it mattered, delivering Australia the base for a series-clinching match victory. Hastings was disappointed with his performance in the fourth ODI and was particularly miffed with himself when David Willey smashed a six over his head to seal the game for England. Hastings was all the more motivated to make an impact in the final ODI and was extremely pleased with himself for doing so. “For me to get hit back over my head like that … it is not what I’m about,” said Hastings. “I was spewing with that after the game, I said to (wicketkeeper Matthew Wade) ‘I don’t want this to be my last chance for Aus. I didn’t expect it to pan out this way … I didn’t even expect to be here. To get this game (on Sunday) and bowl the way I did it was probably the happiest moment in my career,” Hales told cricket.com.au. England vs Australia 2015: Alex Hales must be dropped following repeated failures

Hastings admitted he’d be disappointed if he was denied another chance to wear his country’s colours but will be satisfied to have performed that way. “I’d be disappointed if I didn’t get another chance now, I suppose … but if that’s the way it went (I can be pleased),” Hastings said. “Wadey said to me as we went off ‘If that’s your last game as least you’ve done as much as you could’ve done and you know you can compete at this level’.”
