Sri Lanka were bowled out for a score of 200 after 66 overs in their first innings on the opening day of the second and final Test against West Indies at the P Sara Oval in Colombo on Thursday. Nuwan Pradeep was the last batsman dismissed, getting dismissed by debutant Jomel Warrican the latter finished with impressive figures of 4 for 67. Milinda Siriwardana emerged the top-scorer with a knock of 68 in the Sri Lankan batting scorecard, which hardly saw any major contributions barring the newcomer. It was a remarkable comeback by the West Indians, who were completely outplayed in the first Test at Galle that resulted in an innings defeat, but are on course to level the series at the moment. The hosts were handed their first blow in the very first over when struggling opener Kaushal Silva edged a good length delivery to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin. Dimuth Karunaratne, who top-scored in the first Test with an knock of 186, added 34 runs for the second wicket with Kusal Mendis, who made his way into the side for his Test debut at the expense of the out-of-form Lahiru Thirimanne. He was however, trapped leg-before wicket off an inswinging delivery by opposition skipper Jason Holder, with Mendis departing a couple of deliveries later off the bowling of Jerome Taylor. Sri Lanka were in deep trouble minutes before lunch when skipper Angelo Mathews to the slips off the bowling of his West Indian counterpart, getting caught by Kraigg Brathwaite in the process. Resuming from their first session score of 59 for 4, Dinesh Chandimal added 31 runs for the fifth wicket with Siriwardana in an attempt to rebuild the innings, before getting an inside edge off a good length delivery by Taylor. Warrican got his maiden international wicket a few overs later by dismissing wicketkeeper batsman Kusal Perera, who gave him a simple return catch off a full toss.

Siriwardana kept fighting with the bat from one end, eventually bringing up his maiden Test fifty with a massive straight six off Warrican minutes before tea. He eventually perished when he attempted to smash Warrican for a six towards long-off, finding an eagerly awaiting Taylor at the position instead. Herath was unbeaten on 26 till the end of the innings, completing 1,000 Test runs during his knock that contained a four and a six.

Sri Lanka earlier won the toss and elected to bat first, much like their decision in the first Test. While the hosts brought in Mendis and Dilruwan Perera in place of Lahiru Thirimanne and Tharindu Kaushal. West Indies, on the other hand, decided to replace pacer Shannon Gabriel with debutant spinner Warrican.
