South Africa allrounder JP Duminy has been ruled out of the short Australia tour where the team will be involved in three ODIs and one off T20I. According to a Cricket South Africa media release on Tuesday, Duminy will undergo surgery to his right shoulder which not only rules him out of the tour Down Under, but effectively confirms his absence from South Africa’s T20 league, the Mzansi Super League (MSL). Duminy, who was announced as the marquee player for the Cape Town Blitz, will be replaced by Quinton de Kock.

The news comes as a huge blow for South Africa with opening batsman Hashim Amla confirmed to give the tournament a miss after being prescribed more time to nurse his torn finger tendon.

“JP aggravated a pre-existing shoulder injury during the recently concluded series against Zimbabwe. The injury will require surgical management thus ruling him out of the immediate tour of Australia and the upcoming MSL. At the moment, we can’t say how long he will be out for, that is dependent on the results from the surgery,” Dr Mohammed Moosajee said.

Teams have until early February to confirm their World Cup squads and thus the tour of Australia is a big chance for the management to look at options.
