New Delhi: Kannada Actor and Activist Chetan Kumar gave a shocking statement following India’s 1-wicket loss against Bangladesh in the first ODI. He demanded a reservation system for selection in the Indian Cricket System. The demand is getting mixed reactions from cricket fans.
Chetan Kumar was part of a discussion on the reservation in Chamarajanagar “In Indian cricket, 70 percent of the players are from upper castes. If the reservation is implemented in cricket as well, the team’s performance will be better.”
“Most of the players playing in the Indian cricket team are from upper castes. We need to see what is happening with the South African cricket team. The South African cricket board has made it mandatory to have a certain number of non-white players to be in their national team. In India, everyone knows how much money is involved in cricket and the influence of the media on it. If the Indian cricket team needs to perform well, reservation is also necessary. Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) reservations must be brought in for better performance,” he added.
Kumar’s statement was about the 2016 rule of Cricket South Africa which mandate the South African team to have an average minimum of six non-white players and two of them must be black Africans in a season.
Fans are giving a mixed responses to the statement. As expected fans are saying and demanding to keep things like caste and religion out of the debate. Some of them supported Kumar and said that this will help in ensuring diversity.
