India’s probable squad for the West Indies Test series: When the 15-member Indian team, headed by Ajit Agarkar, holds its usual meeting this week for the two-Test series against the West Indies, the biggest question will be whether Karun Nair will get a chance despite his mediocre performance in England. The meeting will be held online on Wednesday, or in person, on the second or third day of the unofficial second Test between India A and West Indies.
Karun’s biggest rival for selection in the playing XI, Nitish Reddy, who is now fit and also part of India’s squad, was left out of the first match but could feature in the second. The first Test between India and West Indies will be played in Ahmedabad from October 2-6, while the second Test will be held in Delhi from October 10-14.
Dhruv Jurel set to replace Pant
Karun, who was a standout in the last Test against England at the Oval, got good starts in every innings. He wasn’t in bad form but couldn’t score many runs. He then suffered a finger injury and missed the Duleep Trophy. He was declared fit at the time of India’s team selection. Established players like KL Rahul, B Sai Sudarshan, and captain Shubman Gill are certain to be included, while Dhruv Jurel is expected to come in as Rishabh Pant remains unfit.
Bishnoi given the role of a spinner
Now it remains to be seen whether India’s extra-batters will be dropped or a unique all-rounder like Reddy will be selected. If all are fit, the three specialist spinners will be Kuldeep Yadav, Washingon Sundar, and Ravi Bishnoi. Mohammed Siraj’s role is confirmed among the fast bowlers, while the reserve spinner may be given a break.
Selection committee chief Agarkar is currently in Dubai to meet with captain Gill and coach Gautam Gambhir. Devdutt Padikkal could be considered as an additional batsman. Shreyas Iyer, who struggled in the first Test, will look to make a stronger impact in the second match if selected.
