The 2015 Rugby World Cup kicked off on Friday, with its opening ceremony taking place at the Twickenham Stadium in London. The event, which was attended by 82,000 spectators at the largest rugby stadium in the world, was attended by the World Rugby Chairman Bernard Lapasset as well as Honourary President of the Rugby World Cup 2015 and member of the British Royal family Prince Harry along with Prince William and Kate Middleton, with the Lapasset declaring the event ‘open’ at the end of the opening ceremony. The start of the tournament also drew the attention of several cricketers, who mostly took to microblogging website Twitter to display their enthusiasm over the event, some of which are mentioned below.

Quite a few cricketers are known to have played rugby at some level. South Africa skipper AB de Villiers was part of the Blue Bulls Under-18 side, one that would go on to produce many future international players. New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum had once forced Dan Carter — currently an All Blacks star — to warm the bench at school-level. According to Telegraphy UK, New Zealand cricket officials were so worried about his rugby prowess, that Sir Richard Hadlee forbade his friends from lending Brendon a pair of boots when he was looking to borrow one. The eighth edition of the Rugby World Cup kicks off with England and Fiji clashing in the first game. South Africa play their opening game against Japan on Saturday, while defending champions New Zealand kick off their campaign on Sunday against Argentina. England have been placed in the ‘group of death’, which also contains Australia along with Wales.
