Kings XI Punjab have decided to not renew their contract with Virender Sehwag who was associated with the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise as a mentor for the past three seasons.

The development comes after Mike Hesson was appointed as the new head coach, replacing Brad Hodge for the upcoming season.

There were reports of Sehwag and Preity Zinta having an altercation during during IPL 2018 but the former India opener has said the incident didn’t lead to his exit from the franchise.

Sehwag told Mumbai Mirror that the decision was taken by the KXIP management and he was made aware of it on Friday.

“I’ve received a mail from the franchise stating that they won’t be needing a brand ambassador and a mentor,” Sehwag was quoted by Mirror as saying. “I was happy being part of the Kings XI Punjab team. It was their decision, so I had no role in the decision-making process.”

Sehwag also posted on his Twitter account confirming the news wishing the team good luck for the future. “All good things must come to an end and I’ve had a wonderful time at Kings 11 Punjab, for 2 seasons as a player and 3 as a mentor. My association with Kings 11 comes to an end and I am thankful for the time I have had here and wish the team all the very best for the times ahead,” Sehwag wrote.

Sehwag joined KXIP as player for IPL 2011 after leaving Delhi Daredevils and later went on to don the hat of a mentor.
