Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders take on last year’s runners-up Chennai Super Kings in a repeat of the final of the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at Eden Gardens.

Last year’s final was a right cliffhanger that Kolkata clinched by five wickets with just two balls remaining in the then defending champions Chennai’s own den. This time, Kolkata holds bragging rights of having the trophy in their cabinet, and Chennai will visit the City of Joy with a mission to wipe the smiles off Gautam Gambhir’s men.

Both teams have been sporadic in their form leading up to this fixture. Chennai have recorded thumping wins over Delhi Daredevils (86 runs) and Kings XI Punjab (10 wickets), but, in between, have faltered against a mediocre Pune Warriors team to whom they lost by 24 runs. Their form in the five games they have played is L, W, W, L, W. However, barring the game against Pune, where they fell short of their target by 24 runs, Chennai have impressed overall in all departments of the game.

Kolkata need to sort out their batting before this match. Aside from Gautam Gambhir and Eoin Morgan, who are averaging in the forties already, none of the other batsmen have managed to perform on more than one occasion. The two stars of last year’s final who helped KKR chase down 190 — Manvinder Bisla and Jacques Kallis — are aggregating 34 and 81 in five matches, respectively, and need to perform. Yusuf Pathan also has to justify his selection as a big-hitting batting all-rounder.
