Sri Lanka’s plan to put India under pressure in their chase of the lukewarm target of 176 has begun well with the wicket of opener KL Rahul, who was dismissed off an arm ball from potent left-arm spin veteran Rangana Herath for 5. With fielders all around the bat, the Indian batsmen are meant to be forced to be jittery, as Herath and off-spinner Tharindu Kaushal try to work up a decent bowling rhythm between them. Rahul has been in good form, having scored 96 in the first innings of one of the unofficial ‘Tests’ play decently between India A and Australia A. This is only his third Test of his career: he scored a century in his last one, against Australia in Sydney. LIVE CRICKET UPDATES: India vs Sri Lanka, 1st Test, Galle, 3rd day

Sri Lanka’s positive body language, a result of gained hope, was brought about by a counterattacking, unbeaten century from Dinesh Chandimal, scored in circumstances of pressure. Sri Lanka were in danger of being bowled out without making India bat again, thereby handing them an innings victory. But that did not happen, as Chandimal struck important stands with middle-order batsman Lahiru Thirimanne, who scored 44, and Jehan Mubarak, who scored 49, to lift his team from 95 for 5 to 367. But India still have the upper hand in this contest, as their batting line-up will be expected to chase down the small-ish total. Moreover, Herath was not at his best in the previous Test series hosted by Sri Lanka: he took two wickets in two Tests played against Pakistan. At stumps, India are at 23 for 1 in seven overs.
