With Murali Vijay ruled out of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka, young Karnataka batsman KL Rahul gets selected to open the innings along with Shikhar Dhawan. Rahul made his Test debut Down Under in the third Test against Australia. He failed to perform, however, came back strong in the fourth Test and scored 110 in the first innings. Speaking about Rahul’s selection, former India batsman and Tamil Nadu coach WV Raman was quoted as saying by DNA, “Correction is happening in its own way. As providence goes, this might be the way that things rectify themselves even though it’s a little unfortunate the way it is happening. Let us not forget that the same thing happened to Dhawan. When Rahul was to play the Bangladesh Test, he got dengue and could not make it. So, Dhawan got a break and got a big hundred.” READ: VVS Laxman previews India vs Sri Lanka Test series

Raman expressed his satisfaction over the fact that the selection committee and the team management is giving the batsman more time to settle down. READ: Virat Kohli vs Sri Lanka

“At least they are giving the guys the cushion of continuity. They are not playing fast and loose in terms of picking or dropping these guys in the fringe in a whimsical manner, unlike in the earlier years,” he said. READ: 5 Indian players to watch out for

Rahul’s Karnataka coach J Arun Kumar said, “A guy like Rahul will serve India for long. He is not a guy who will come in and go out. He is there to stay. His technique is so sound. The selectors should be backing him and he should be a regular member.”

Kumar has coached Karnataka to two successive Ranji Trophy titles (2013-14 & 2014-15). He feels that Rahul should ideally bat somewhere in between No. 1 to 5, if he does not get chance to open.

“He has done it for Karnataka. He is good in the middle order. He is good against spinners as much as he is good against the medium-pacers. They should not make him wait for his chances. Batting is all about rhythm,” he said.

Earlier, India Team Director, Ravi Shastri, said, “Rahul is a tremendous young talent. He can bat in the top three. He is very young and has got a career in front of him.”
