In the ninth edition of the ongoing Indian Premier League, Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Kings XI Punjab by 7 runs to become the table toppers of the group stages.  Winning the toss, the visiting captain, Murali Vijay, elected to bowl first. The KKR openers began the innings cautiously as Robin Uthappa and Gautam Gambhir continued their good run in the tournament and scored 70 off 49 balls and 54 off 45 balls respectively. The hosts posted 164 for 3 in 20 overs owing to some good death bowling by Sandeep and Mohit Sharma. In reply, Kings XI Punjab were tottering at 13 for 3 but came back into the match because of the pair of Glenn Maxwell and Wriddhiman Saha. Maxwell played a typical aggressive innings and scored 68 off 43 balls but the team struggled to carry the momentum after his dismissal. The late onslaughts were provided by David Miller and Akshar Patel but till then the match was well out of their reach. Andrew Russell, Piyush Chawla and Shakib al Hasan kept the pressure generated from their ends to hand their team another win and climb on top of the points table. Andrew Russell was awarded the man-of-the-match award owing to his match changing spell of 4-0-20-4. At the half most stage, Gautam Gambhir’s side is tied up with Suresh-Raina’s Gujarat Lions but KKR is on top owing to a better net run rate.
