After losing the first ODI by seven wickets on Sunday (October 19) at the Optus Stadium, India will now face Australia in a must-win second match on Thursday (October 23) at the Adelaide Oval. The series opener was affected by rain, and India struggled with the bat, scoring only 136 runs for nine wickets in 26 overs. They then failed to defend the DLS-adjusted target of 131 against Mitchell Marsh’s team. As Shubman Gill and his side prepare for the crucial second ODI, Indian fans will be hoping for a stronger all-round performance from the players.

In Perth, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma scored just 0 and 8 runs, respectively. Despite this, they are expected to retain their spots in the playing XI, with Rohit continuing as opener and Kohli at No. 3 in Adelaide. However, the bowling lineup may see a few changes for the second ODI.

Harshit Rana’s place in the playing XI is also under review. The Delhi-based pacer struggled with both bat and ball in the first ODI, drawing criticism from fans and experts. He could be replaced by Prasidh Krishna.

Krishna, 29, has played 17 ODIs for India and taken 29 wickets in those matches. In IPL 2025, he was the highest wicket-taker and played a key role in India’s six-run win over England in the Oval Test on August 4, 2025.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel are also included in India’s ODI squad. However, unless there is an injury in the batting lineup which currently there isn’t they are unlikely to play in the Adelaide match.

India’s likely playing XI for the 2nd ODI against Australia: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill (C), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, KL Rahul (WK), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna.
