Sri Lankan president Maithripala Sirisena gifted the retiring legend Kumar Sangakkara with a memento and offered him the post to become the Sri Lankan high commissioner to United Kingdom (UK). Sangakkara was bestowed with plenty of memento’s from all quarters including his college, school and his past cricket clubs. Sangakkara thanked everyone ranging from his fans to the Indian team with an emotional speech that required him battling tears in order to complete it. Sangakkara has been the unarguably greatest batsman to have come from the island nation and deserved all the praise. In a career spanning 15 years, Sangakkara featured in 134 Tests and amassed 12,400 runs at an astounding average of 57.40. His average is bettered only by Sir Don Bradman, Ken Barrington, Wally Hammond and Garfield Sobers among batsmen who scored more than 5000 runs. President Sirisena told Sangakkara, “You have been a great honour to Sri Lanka,” before making him the offer. Sangakkara was taken by surprise with the offer and said he’d consider it and have a talk about it to the President later. “It was a surprise, I have to go and think about it and discuss with his excellency (the president)” Sangakkara said.
