Kumar Sangakkara, Richard Levi guide Gemini Arabians to 234/3 vs Libra Legends in MCL 2016 opener

Gemini Arabians finished on a strong score of 208 for the loss of two wickets against Libra Legends at the end of their stipulated 20 overs in the opening match of the Masters Champions League (MCL) T20 2016. Kumar Sangakkara was the pick among the Gemini batsmen, smashing 86 off just 43 deliveries, including six fours and seven  sixes. Brad Hodge unbeaten at the other end on 5 off 2 balls with Justin Kemp batting on 3 from 3. Richard Levi was the other major run-getter in the innings, amassing 62 run off 43 balls and adding 84 runs for the second wicket with Sangakkara, with Virender Sehwag’s quickfire 21 off 11 balls establishing the platform for Gemini to finish on the massive score.

Gemini skipper Sehwag smashed a six off the first ball of the match off Andy McKay, and got his side off to a superb start to bring up the 50-run opening partnership in no time. Libra Legends finally got the breakthrough when he top-edged a short delivery towards backward square-leg, where former Australian chinaman Brad Hogg held on to a simple catch. Sangakkara was off to a slow start, getting off the mark off his eighth delivery of his innings.

The Libra Legends earlier won the toss, and skipper Jacques Kallis elected to bowl. Kallis was picked as the captain of the side in the absence of Sourav Ganguly, who opted out of the tournament due to back spasms that he claimed had suffered during the Cricket All Stars tournament last year. Earlier in the day, the opening ceremony was hosted by cricketer-turned-commentator Danny Morrison.

Brief scores:

Gemini Arabians 214 for 3 in 20 overs (Richard Levi 62, Kumar Sangakkara 86, Brad Hodge 46*; Ryan ten Doeschate 1 for 44) vs Libra Legends.
