James Anderson and Jonny Baristow combined to take their seventh wicket and catch of the match respectively to help England reduce Sri Lanka to 35 for 2 before Kusal Mendis (47 not out) and Dinesh Chandimal (7 not out) put on an unbroken 42 runs to take the visitors to 77 for 2 at lunch on Day Three of the first Test at Headingley. Dimuth Karunaratane and Kaushal Silva were done in by Anderson’s swing early in the day as Sri Lanka, following on, were jolted early. Earlier on Day Two Bairstow completed his maiden Test century in England in front of his home crowd. The Yorkshire-born wicketkeeper-batsman went on to score 140 off just 183 balls with 13 fours and 1 six. However, his job was far from done; chasing England’s 298 Sri Lanka were shot out for a mere 91 in the 37th over of their innings. Angelo Mathews was the top-scorer for Sri Lanka with 34, while Lahiru Thirimanne made 22, Dinesh Chandimal scored 15, and Kaushal Silva 11. No other batsman crossed double figures, with three batsmen recording ducks and the last man being unbeaten without scoring. It was at Leeds in 2014 that Sri Lanka beat England to win the series 1-0, but England fought back this time around.
