Varun Chakravarthy‘s maiden Indian Premier League stint has come to an early end after failing to recover from injuries.

Chakravarthy, a mystery spinner, played just one match during the ongoing season for Kings XI Punjab, against Kolkata Knight Riders in which he returned figures of 1/35 from three overs.

He ended up getting injured during KXIP’s visit to Chennai in April which sidelined him for a few weeks. The franchise were hoping for the 27-year-old to get fit in time to be available for the late stage of the league but his failure to regain full fitness brought his campaign to an early end.

“While the team were hopeful that Chakravarthy would return for the final few games of the campaign, his recovery however hasn’t been sufficient. The 27-year-old will return home as a result. KXIP wishes him a speedy recovery and the very best for the rest of the year,” KXIP said in a media release on Wednesday.

Tamil Nadu spinner Chakravarthy came into the IPL with much hype surrounding his mystery and bagful of variations (seven to be precise) through which he made a name for himself in the Tamil Nadu Premier League. The reputation he had built saw KXIP fork out a whopping INR 8.4 crore to secure his services at the IPL auction in December last year.

KXIP are currently at the seventh spot in the IPL points table and need to at both their remaining matches, improve their net run-rate and see a couple of results go their way to make the playoffs.
