Bengal registered an emphatic 38-run win over Assam in the opening match of the Syed Mustaq Ali T20 tournament at Keenan Stadium.

Electing to bat after winning the toss, Bengal scored 131 for five from 20 overs and bundled Assam out for 93 with 23 balls to spare.

Bengal opener Anstup Majumdar made a cautious knock of 28 (5×4) off 23 balls even though his partner A Jhunjhunwala (6) returned to pavilion after Assam’s Pritam Das caught him off Kunal Saikia in the fourth over.

Subhomoy Das, who stepped in following Majumdar’s dismissal, hit an unbeaten 36 (4×4) off 42-balls.

He stitched two valuable partnerships with middle-order Wriddhiman Saha for 33 runs for the third wicket and 35 runs with Debabrata Das, who notched up 23 runs.

Pritam Das scalped two wickets for 22, while Abu N Ahmed, R Satish and Tarjinder Singh bagged a wicket apiece for Assam.

In reply, Assam kept losing wickets at regular intervals after openers Dheeraj Jadav (10) and Pritam Debnath (14) gave a good start with a 27 run partnership.

A swashbuckling 30 by Kunal Saikia rescued the Assam innings, as he in the company of R Satish, who scored 13 runs, fetched 23 runs for the seventh wicket stand.

Saikia’s 20-ball knock included two fours and two sixes before he fell prey to Iresh Saxena.

Dhiraj Goswami remained unbeaten on 10 (2×4).

Medium pacer L R Shuka (three for 20) and Saxena (3 for 13) emerged successful bowlers for Bengal, who bagged four points.
