Sri Lanka’s former T20I skipper Lasith Malinga who earlier joined his Indian Premier League (IPL) 2016 team Mumbai Indians, has now been ruled out of the tournament. MI’s medical team did a through check-up of Malinga’s fitness only to announce that he is unfit to play any game for them. His knee injury could very well rule him out of Sri Lanka’s upcoming tour to England and also the Carribean Premier League (CPL). Before the start of IPL MI head coach Ricky Ponting had mentioned about Sri Lankan ace bowler Lasith Malinga to miss few IPL matches due to injury. But as per recent confirmation, Malinga was back in squad on Friday and was expected to stay out for few matches. “Mr. Malinga will present himself before the SLC panel of expert doctors on Wednesday (April 20) and depending on the outcome of the said medical examinations, be required to face a match fitness grading, after which SLC will take the next appropriate steps,” a release from the Sri Lankan Cricket board said as reported by ESPNcricinfo. Malinga has played 98 matches in IPL picking up 143 wickets at an average of 17.80. He has also played seven seasons so far for MI after missing the first season due to an injury

Malinga Earlier there were reports that Sri Lanka Cricket was reluctant to give the pacer a No Objection Certificate (NOC), for which the SLC chief Tilanga Sumathipala said, “He can’t go without our permission. If he defies us and goes, he can only return after sitting on the bench.” On the return Malinga back to the squad, Ponting says, “I believe he will be joining us after the first couple of games to have his fitness assessed. Right now it’s unlikely he will take part in the first half of the tournament anyway.”
