Ravichandran Ashwin may not believe that IPL is a platform for India comeback but he isn t earning any more fans among BCCI bigwigs. He has already lost his limited-overs place to wrist spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav and now Ashwin runs the risk of losing his Test spot too, if his penchant for leg-spin continues.

The champion off-spinner has resorted to bowling leg-spin on regular basis and The Times of India quotes a concerned official for the same.

We feel very sad and concerned about it. He tries too many things. We don t know, and it s difficult to understand why he s trying this tactic. It s ok to try leg spin as a variation once in a while in a T20 match, but he s experimenting with this in every game - be it in the IPL, Ranji Trophy or even the Irani Cup. In Irani, he was bowling leg spin from over and round the stumps. In a T20 game, variation is fine, but have you ever seen an off-spinner doing this? He can t suddenly become a legspinner, a source told TOI s Gaurav Gupta.

https://twitter.com/BCCI/status/973846653336612864

The experiment cost Ashwin 129 runs in 43.3 overs for 1 wicket during the Irani Cup earlier this season.

If he continues like this, he ll find himself out of the team sooner than later. If his performance doesn t improve, things look tough for him. The England series is very crucial for him in terms of his future in Test cricket.

We must remember that Ashwin has taken more than 300 Test wickets, but the time has come to blood Kuldeep and Chahal in Tests. Both are doing pretty well in the ODIs & T20Is. The way these young wrist spinners are bowling, picking up wickets regularly in limited over games, they may have a better opportunity (to succeed) in England too, he added.

[link-to-post url= https://www.cricketcountry.com/news/ipl-2018-ravichandran-ashwin-is-enjoying-his-captaincy-at-kxip-camp-701358 ][/link-to-post]

Earlier, Kris Srikkanth too expressed that he isn t a fan of Ashwin s leg-spin and asserted that the Tamil Nadu off-spinner doesn t fit the bill in limited-overs team.

Author s Take

It is always good to add more to your skill armoury but Ashwin has bowled more leg-spinners than conventional off-breaks for Kings XI Punjab (KXIp) during the ongoing IPL. Ashwin is amongst the finest spinners in the world, and it is off-spin that has helped him climb the stairs to top.

It is indeed concerning if leg-spin takes precedence for Ashwin. He has played the most important role in India s rise to the pinnacle in Tests. India needs to do its best in order to preserve their match-winner.
