Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to bat against Rajasthan Royals on a dry track in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014. It was Lendl Simmons, who has been in fine form this season who opened the batting with the experienced campaigner, Michael Hussey. Both batsmen looked for a steady start during the intial stage of the match. Ankit Sharma opened the bowling for Rajasthan with his slow left arm orthodox. After the first over of the game they were four for no loss.

Surprisingly, Rajasthan dropped Pravin Tambe for the game. Shane Watson, who missed the last game though made a comeback into the game. The second over of the game was bowled by Dhawal Kulkarni, the medium pacer. He hardly got any movement off the track. Simmons, on the other end of the spectrum looked to play his shots mainly through the on side. It was Simoons, who opened his shoulders by essaying the first boundary innings for Mumbai setup.

The third over of the game was bowled by Ankit, who continued to bowl with decent control. Both openers struggled to get him away. Simmons tried to play inside out shots, yet struggled to score boundaries.
