Team India registered their third-highest run chase in Test cricket on Wednesday when they successfully achieved the 276-run target set by the West Indies in their opening Test match at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in New Delhi.
This is India’s 111th Test match win in their cricketing history, and also the first occasion when the hosts defeated the Caribbean side at the Kotla.
Also, this is the 11th occasion when India successfully chased a target in excess of 200 runs in fourth innings. Out of these 11 wins, eight were registered in the last decade, and four wins have come since 2010.
Indian batting stalwarts Sachin Tendulkar (76), VVS Laxman (61 not out) and Virender Sehwag (55) were the architects of their win on a crumbling Kotla wicket after they lost the openers in quick succession.
India’s record of highest run chase is also against the same opposition, when they registered a six-wicket comprehensive win at the Port of Spain in April, 1976 chasing a huge target of 406 runs.
