Man of the Match: William Porterfield for his 113

  • 5:21 PM IST

And Afghanistan take the first step ahead winning the match by 31 runs. Rashid Khan and Dawlat Zadran claim 4 wickets each. Peter Chase was the last wicket to fall. So Afghanistan win the 1st ODI of the five-match ODI.

  • 5:14 PM IST

Now Rashid Khan goes ahead of Dawlat Zadran with 4 wickets. Just one more wicket to go and Peter Chase is smashing boundaries. Can Rashid Khan get a fifer here?

  • 4:39 PM IST

It is not Rashid Khan for a change but Dawlat Zadran who has bagged two crucial wickets. First Porterfield and now Gary Wilson for a golden duck. Is Ireland going to lose the match from here? Afghanistan are in good stead. Meanwhile, another wicket for Afghanistan, Kevin O’Brien goes for 13

  • 4:28 PM IST

Rashid Khan is back and Ireland are taking their own sweet time to sail through victory. Another 15 overs to go and 88 runs needed to win. The victory is not too far sighted. Porterfield has already smashed a century and taking his side closer to win. Moving at a runrate of 5, there is nothing to worrisome for Ireland. Oh, while I write this, Rashid surprises us. He picks Niall for 10. Afghanistan find their way some way or the other.

  • 4:00 PM IST

And Afghanistan finally manage to break the growing partnership between Stirling and Porterfield. And Rashid Khan provides the breakthrough. But the captain is on his way to yet another ODI century after the UAE series. Niall O’Brien has entered who can equally provide good finish to a chase.

  • 3:39 PM IST

With this consistent partnership and Stirling’s fifty as well. Looks like Ireland are in safe hands. They need just 150 to win from another 25 overs. If they go on, victory is definitely on cards. This is smart cricket from Ireland.

  • 3:08 PM IST

And it is not just 100 up for Ireland but also yet another fifty for Porterfield. Stirling who entered first has not got a fifty yet while Porterfield does it. Ireland are now 100 for 1 after 17 overs

  • 2:55 PM IST
Porterfield and Stirling are moving steadily. And now we need some action in the game. Does not seem to be interesting now. Afghanistan are giving their all out but no luck.

But big news on the other hand is, ICC Chairman Shashank Manohar has quit. Surprise? Shocked?
  • 2:37 PM IST

Porterfield and Stirling in no time have built a steady partnership. Just what Ireland needed to respond to Afghanistan strong bowling. Porterfield has caught up and is already on 29. Stirling is playing s perfect supporting role. Ireland need 223 to win

  • 2:18 PM IST
Porterfield is taking things seriously after the review. He has smashed four successive boundaries off Dawlat Zadran and Amir Hamza. Afghanistan playing around with spinners more and less on pacers. However, the trick seems to be going off the hands of the hosts
  • 2:08 PM IST

Apart from showing his prowess with the bat, Shahzad is showing immense talent behind the stumps as well and it is Porterfield who is the victim here. And Porterfield is safe. But good bowling as well as fielding here from Afghanistan.

  • 2:00 PM IST

Amir Hamza provides the first breakthrough and a big wicket of Ed Joyce. Just the start Afghanistan needed from here. Mohammad Shahzad making no error behind the stumps. Captain Porterfield joins along with Stirling now. Ireland now 13/1 after 3 overs

  • 1:50 PM IST
And Amir Hamza begins the proceedings for Afghanistan, Ed Joyce and Paul Stirling at the other end. Very cut-to-cut bowling from Afghanistan as we can see. Just three runs from that over. Ireland 3 after 1st over.
  • 1:05 PM IST

The final over begins and Chase get his first wicket after a long wait. Gulbadin Naib goes for 7. But Nabi stays and that is what Afghanistan need now. Ireland meanwhile bowling tight lengths. And Nabi does some extraordinary batting here. Boundary from the third ball. Three more to go. Managed 2 runs from the next two deliveries. The final delivery and just a single. So Ireland need 293 to win. Can they? WIll they?

  • 1:00 PM IST

Afghanistan should rethink their plans and should have got Nabi soon on the crease. Consecutive boundaries for the side. One more to go and they are already 283 now.

  • 12:57 PM IST

Afghanistan are well reaching the 300-run mark. With Naib and Nabi on the crease and the death overs in place. Nabi goes big and is ensuring Afghanistan reach the desired target. 271 for 6 after 48 overs.

  • 12:47 PM IST

Double blow for Afghanistan: The well set batsmen in the form of Hashmatullah Shahidi and Samiullah Shenwari have been dismissed in a span of 3 deliveries. Gulbadin Naib and Mohammad Nabi will now have to ensure that Afghanistan reach a formidable total. There was a long delay to check if Andy McBrine did indeed take catch cleanly. In the end, Shenwari was adjudged out. With 4 overs to go, Afghanistan have reached 256/6.

  • 12:15 PM IST

Afghanistan have managed to reach 206/4 after 40 overs. They will be eyeing a score close to 300 from here. They have set themselves up beautifully. They have good depth in their batting and should be able to get a formidable total on the board. Ireland will look to get a few quick wickets to cut the run flow from here.

  • 12:07 PM IST

And while we are talking, Afghanistan face another fall of wicket. Rahmat Shah’s goes for 78, whose presence could have boosted Afghanistan. However, it is back to beginning from sctartch as Samiullah Shenwari enters.

  • 12:02 PM IST

Hasmatullah Shahidi has entered and no sign of Nabi yet. Afghanistan at this stage will need a batsmen who can play the big shots. However, Shahidi is taking control of the game at this crucial time. 250 should be competitive total from here with the inclusion of Ed Joyce and Niall O’Brien as well.

  • 11:51 AM IST

And the tales are twisting towards Ireland. Stanikzai is the man this time and he goes for 10. Murtagh gets his first, comfortably caught by Niall O’Brien behind the wickets.

  • 11:45 AM IST

Another 17 overs to go and Afghanistan have managed 168 on board. The pitch is behaving slow but Afghanistan are finding momentum against medium pacers. Rahmat Shah will have to be the driving force. Although the captain is playing the big shots to keep the game alive.

  • 11:35 AM IST

  • 11:27 AM IST

Dockrell was looking for that wicket for a long time and the other opener Noor Ali falls as well for 51. Substitute McCarthy grabs it. But it does not end here for Afghanistan. There is Nabi, Stanikzai, Rashid Khan, Najibullah who are yet to come.

  • 11:21 AM IST

And that is a fifty for Rahmat Shah as well.

  • 11:16 AM IST

So who is going to get their fifty first? Noor Ali is already on 49 since the beginning of the innings while Rahmat Shah coming later has already put up 47. Aaand Zadran gets it first 🙂

  • 11:09 AM IST

With game moving pretty slow and run rate coming down, Afghanistan are now trying to find the gaps play boundaries to keep the game alive. Rahmat Shah finally finds one and smashes a boundary off Thompson

  • 10:56 AM IST

The game seems to slow down a bit after Shahzad’s blistering knock. But Ireland would not mind these singles and threes coming their way after witnessing those big shots across the stadium.

Afghanistan enter as favourites after clean sweeping Ireland in the three-match T20I series. They will look to solidify their dominance as they begin the 50-over journey from Wednesday. Afghanistan have adjusted to the Indian conditions well and that was shown through their all-round performance in the T20I series. Mohammad Shahzad has been in good hold of the format over the last one year. However, he did falter when they played the five-match ODI series against Zimbabwe, barring one fifty. Samiullah Shenwari has also not been in great form over the last 10 ODIs. However, top-order batsman Rahmat Shah has been in solid nick after a bright start to his career, while captain Asghar Stanikzai and Mohammad Nabi are obvious threats in the middle. AFG vs IRE, 1st ODI preview: Porterfield’s men look for answers against in-form opponents

Afghanistan also have an extremely competent group of all-rounders in Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, and Najibullah Zadran. However, their real strength lies in their spin twins, Rashid Khan and Amir Hamza. AFG vs IRE, 1st ODI: Nabi vs Thompson, Shahzad vs Rankin and other key clashes

Ireland, on the other hand, have put up stiff competition in the recently concluded UAE series with William Porterfield and Kevin O’Brien amongst the major run-getters. With the return of Ed Joyce and Niall O’Brien, the hosts have something to be wary about. George Dockrell and Jacob Mulder are few spinners who kept Afghanistan on their toes in the T20I series. Ireland will be hopeful to bounce back and regain their momentum in the 50-over format. Afghanistan vs Ireland, 1st ODI at Greater Noida: Likely XI for both sides
