South Africa would look to continue their batting form when they take on Australia on the third day of the second Test at Adelaide on Saturday.

Graeme Smith produced an inspiring captain’s knock on Friday to lift South Africa‘s morale in the second Adelaide Test after a horror opening day chasing the ball in Australia‘s run onslaught.

On the opening day, Michael Clarke posted a successive double century and David Warner and Michael Hussey unleashed whirlwind hundreds as Australia pummelled a demoralised South Africa in the second Test.

Clarke backed up his unbeaten double century from last week’s drawn Brisbane series-opener with another overpowering innings, becoming the first person in the history of Test cricket to post four 200s in a calendar year.

Warner and Hussey compounded the misery for the Proteas with quickfire tons as Australia romped to 482 for five on the opening day at Adelaide.

It was just the fifth time in all Tests that Australia have scored more than 400 runs in a day’s play.

Brief Scores: Australia 550 (Michael Clarke 230, David Warner 119, Michael Hussey 103; Morne Morkel 5 for 146, Jacques Kallis 2 for 19) lead South Africa 217 for 2 (Graeme Smith 111*, Alviro Petersen 54; David Warner 1 for 27) by 333 runs.
