India set a 171-run target against England after Rohit Sharma cracked a rapid 55 not out and Gautam Gambhir scored a fluent 45 in their ICC World Twenty20 clash on Sunday.

After being asked to bat first, India scored 171 for four in their allotted 20 overs.

India s move to open the innings with Irfan Pathan backfired when the all-rounder was dismissed by England pacer Steven Finn in the third over of the innings.

Pathan scored eight runs off as many balls, hitting one boundary.

Gambhir and Virat Kohli led India’s charge with their 57-run stand against England after the early loss of Pathan.

Gambhir scored a fluent 45, which came from 38 balls and five boundaries.

Kohli continued his good run with the bat scoring 40 off 32 balls, cracking six boundaries. But the right-handed middle order batsman missed out on a half-century, falling to Graeme Swann in the 11th over.

Rohit clobbered five boundaries and a six to score a rapid 55 not out, which came from 33 balls.

Earlier, England captain Stuart Broad won the toss and elected to field.
