Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live blog of the second day’s play in the third Ashes 2015 Test at Edgbaston on Thursday. This is Devarchit Varma, and I will be bringing you the live cricket scores and updates of the match. It was a horrendous first day for Australia, who were shot down for 136 in their first innings as for the first time in this Ashes, James Anderson looked in his usual elements under cloudy sky. A fighting half-century from their in-form opener Chris Rogers was the only bright spot as Australia produced pathetic batting performance, and the poor form of Michael Clarke and Adam Voges continued to hurt them. Anderson was in full rhythm as he snaffled six wickets to help England prove Australia’s decision of batting first after winning the toss, wrong. LIVE CRICKET SCORE AUSTRALIA 168/7 in Overs 55: Australia get to stumps today and will try to come out tomorrow morning with a fresh mindset. The pitch has no demons, they can still add few runs to give their bowlers to bowl something for. BATTING: Peter Nevill 37 (108), Mitchell Starc 7 (29)

Powered By

LIVE CRICKET SCORE AUSTRALIA 160/7 in Overs 51: Australia have taken a slender lead but it is only a matter of three good balls to end their resistance. England have bowled really well, and Steven Finn has been a revelation for them here at Edgbaston, which continues to produce memorable Ashes Tests. Starc hanging around along with Nevill for the time being. BATTING: Peter Nevill 35 (108), Mitchell Starc 1 (14)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE AUSTRALIA 153/6 in Overs 46.1: Steven Finn returns to haunt Australia as he breaks the stubborn stand between Nevill and Johnson, getting the latter caught by Ben Stokes. Australia lead by 8 runs now. BATTING: Peter Nevill 29 (93),

OUT! Mitchell Johnson c Ben Stokes b Steven Finn 14 (38)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE AUSTRALIA 150/6 in Overs 44: Johnson and Nevill have shown the others how to bat on this wicket, as they have taken Australia past England’s lead of 145. It looks like the game will go into the third day, and the most crucial factor will be how long will these two and the remaining Australian batsmen will be able to hold the England bowlers. . BATTING: Peter Nevill 27 (83), Mitchell Johnson 13 (35)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE AUSTRALIA 137/6 in Overs 38: So far so good for Mitchell Johnson. He has been a far better batsman than some of the specialist ones in the middle-order. He and Nevill have ensured that England will bat again, unless Australia lose four wickets not getting the remaining 8 runs. BATTING: Peter Nevill 16 (64), Mitchell Johnson 11 (30)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE AUSTRALIA 121/6 in Overs 33: Jimmy Anderson has to hobble off the field! Hope it’s nothing too serious. Ben Stokes is bowling well, Moeen Ali comes on at the other end after Joe Root finishes off his over. BATTING: Peter Nevill 12 (25), Mitchell Johnson 2 (13)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE AUSTRALIA 111/6 in Overs 28.3: Jimmy Anderson gets his first wicket of the innings and that too of the in-form batsman David Warner. The left-hander tries to flick it on the leg side, gets a leading edge and Adam Lyth gets a dolly at extra cover. Australia staring at an innings defeat here! BATTING: Peter Nevill 5 (25)

OUT! David Warner c Adam Lyth b James Anderson 77 (62)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE AUSTRALIA 101/5 in Overs 26: David Warner has done all the scoring for Australia in this innings so far, he has actually scored 75 % of the runs they have got in this innings. The lead is below 45, but Australia are in danger of a massive defeat here in the third Ashes 2015 Test. Steven Finn has been bowling beautifully, and I am sure no Englishman can answer why he was away for last two years. He has single-handedly brought England back in to the series. BATTING: David Warner 76 (56), Peter Nevill 1 (18)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE AUSTRALIA 92/5 in Overs 22.1: Steven Finn has his third wicket of the innings as he cleans up Mitchell Marsh with a peach of a delivery. The ball was aimed straight on the wickets, poor from Marsh who failed to read it completely and the ball crashed into the wickets between the bat and pads. BATTING: David Warner 68 (49)

OUT! Mitchell Marsh b Steven Finn 6 (24)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE AUSTRALIA 92/4 in Overs 22: Mitchell Marsh survived a review taken by England for leg-before, as a delivery from Steven Finn was clipping the top of the middle stump and umpire Aleem Dar had adjudged it not out. I think the umpire reckoned the ball was too high. Australia still trail by more than 50 runs. BATTING: David Warner 68 (49), Mitchell Marsh 6 (23)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE AUSTRALIA 87/4 in Overs 20: The manner in which wickets have fallen in this Test, there is a strong possibility that it could end today. And if not today, tomorrow for sure unless Australia pull off some sort of a magic. Mitchell Marsh and Dave Warner at the crease, and they have a humongous challenge in font of them. England still ahead by more than 50 runs. Australia will need anything more than 200 at least to daunt England. BATTING: David Warner 66 (46), Mitchell Marsh 3 (14)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE AUSTRALIA 76/4 in Overs 16.4: OUT! The horror tour for Michael Clarke the batsman continues as he is caught by Adam Lyth in the slips off Steven Finn! What a poor tour this is turning out for Clarke, England are all over Australia here at Edgbaston. Another man in poor form comes out, it is Adam Voges. And he is OUT! First ball duck for Voges, who too is caught in the slips. Australia in tatters! BATTING: David Warner 57 (38),

OUT! Michael Clarke c Adam Lyth b Steven Finn 3 (18)

OUT! Adam Voges c Ian Bell b Steven Finn 0 (1)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE AUSTRALIA 75/2 in Overs 16: Clarke and Warner both take a run each in the first over of the final session from Broad. Australia trail by 70 runs. BATTING: David Warner 57 (38), Michael Clarke 3 (18)

Michael Clarke has struggled on almost all the deliveries he faced this afternoon at Edgbaston, he would not want another failure which would sink his side further. England have removed the two most dangerous Australian batsmen, and their lead of 72 at this moment looks as good as of 172. Let’s see how many of those Warner is able to knock off with his rapid strokeplay.

LIVE CRICKET SCORE AUSTRALIA 73/2 in Overs 15: Thanks to David Warner and his record half-century, Australia have been able to put up some fight. Steve Smith would be dejected with the manner of his dismissal, as he was the one England would have wanted after Chris Rogers. It’s time for tea. BATTING: David Warner 56 (37), Michael Clarke 2 (13)

David Warner has created a record, meanwhile. He has faced only 35 balls and has completed his half-century, which is now the fastest in the history of the Ashes.

LIVE CRICKET SCORE AUSTRALIA 67/2 in Overs 13: David Warner has been on and of  this Ashes 2015. He did not contribute much in the first innings but today he has stepped up to race to a rapid half-century. But this is just the beginning, Australia have a mountain to climb. England ahead by 78 runs. BATTING: David Warner 51 (35), Michael Clarke 1 (9)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE AUSTRALIA 62/2 in Overs 13: Australia have a huge challenge in their hands now. The blokes who won the second Test have fallen for cheap in the third, and it is upto the rest to stand up and show some fight. Steve Smith, of all people, plays an atrocious stroke to get out. A short ball, Smith tried to smash it but got a leading edge. Unnecessary, unwanted and reckless stroke. Michael Clarke walks out. England ahead by 82 runs. BATTING: David Warner 48 (34), Michael Clarke 0 (4)

OUT! Steven Smith c Jos Buttler b Steven Finn 8 (27)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE AUSTRALIA 50/1 in Overs 10: David Warner has started to get into the groove with a few glorious strokes for boundaries off Steven Finn. Australia now trail by less than 100 and they should go on in this passion to remain safe. Smith too has started to look for runs after a slow start.  BATTING: David Warner 36 (27), Steven Smith 8 (20)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE AUSTRALIA 31/1 in Overs 8: Australia have been steadied by David Warner and Steven Smith since that dismissal. Australia need one strong partnership to get back into this contest, after all England’s lead is not that big by the margin. Australia trail by 114 runs.  BATTING: David Warner 24 (19), Steven Smith 1 (16)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE AUSTRALIA 18/1 in Overs 4: WICKET! Stuart Broad has dealt a massive blow to Australia as he traps Chris Rogers in front of the wickets. Rogers was hit high on the backfoot, and after a long discussion he reviewed it. But the umpire rejected the appeal as Rogers and Warner had utilised more than 15 seconds to arrive on a decision. Australia have lost their best batsman under seaming conditions! England ahead by 127 runs. BATTING: David Warner 11 (7), Steven Smith 1 (4)

OUT! Chris Rogers lbw Stuart Broad 6 (13)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE AUSTRALIA 10/0 in Overs 2: This looks like more of a contest between which team can be bad than their opponents. Australian openers have begun on a nervous note, amid that David Warner hitting a glorious four through cover. England’s lead is of 135. BATTING: Chris Rogers 0 (6), David Warner 10 (6)

England will feel they have a huge lead which will help them to dominate Australia. More than an hour is left for the tea break, and the first target for the tourists would be to score about 50 runs without losing wickets. Big test coming up for the Aussies to show their skills against swing and seam bowling. Players have walked out in the middle again…

LIVE CRICKET SCORE ENGLAND 281/10 in Overs 67.1: Not much was expected from the England tail as James Anderson nicks one behind to the wicketkeeper Peter Nevill. England bowled out for 281, with a healthy lead of 145 runs.  BATTING: Steven Finn 0 (5)

OUT! James Anderson c Peter Nevill b Mitchell Starc 3 (2)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE ENGLAND 278/9 in Overs 66.3: And another one bites the dust! And it is Moeen who has fallen to a poor stroke to Hazlewood, who gets another wicket. England’s lead is of 142 and last man, James Anderson comes out. BATTING: Steven Finn 0 (5)

OUT! Moeen Ali c David Warner b Josh Hazlewood 59 (78)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE ENGLAND 277/8 in Overs 65: Finally! A wicket for Australia as Broad has fallen to Hazlewood. There are four days left in this Test but England have been playing since lunch as if there are only two left. A short ball outside off, Broad goes for the mighty heave and ends up hitting very high in the air. Mitchell Marsh takes a clean catch. An excellent innings from Broad comes to an end. BATTING: Moeen Ali 58 (74),

OUT! Stuart Broad c Mitchell Marsh b Josh Hazlewood 31 (55)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE ENGLAND 265/7 in Overs 63: Well played, Moeen Ali! He has brought up his fourth half-century in Test cricket and the eighth-wicket stand is taking the game away from Australia. Moeen and Broad have so far added 75 runs and surprisingly, they have come out in a very aggressive mood since the lunch break. England lead by 129 now. BATTING: Moeen Ali 50 (66), Stuart Broad 23 (51)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE ENGLAND 258/7 in Overs 61: Mitch Johnson has started to leak runs and the English fans have started making noise every time a run is scored off the Aussie pacer. They like to mock him, as always. Australia need wickets, no way they can allow English lead to soar higher. Three boundaries were hit by Moeen to Johnson in the over. England lead by 122 now. BATTING: Moeen Ali 47 (59), Stuart Broad 23 (46)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE ENGLAND 238/7 in Overs 58: This partnership between Broad and Moeen has started to hurt Australia. The lead is now past 100 as Broad gets two boundaries off Nathan Lyon. Australia need wickets, desperately. BATTING: Moeen Ali 27 (47), Stuart Broad 23 (40)

Play has begun at Edgbaston post lunch break, Johnson is bowling at the moment. While the players were having their lunch, this is what happened on the field:

After a horror Day One, Australia picked themselves back up but they will have to pay price of being poor in the first innings. England lead by 85, and even though they cannot ‘out-bat’ Australia, they surely can cause a lot of psychological damage if their lead goes to 150 or above. I will be back in 40 minutes or so, hang on!

LIVE CRICKET SCORE ENGLAND 221/7 in Overs 56: Fortune swung towards both the sides. Earlier in the day Australia were on top but then England have taken things back in control with this crucial 31-run stand for the eighth wicket between Moeen and Broad. England lead by 85 runs, and it is time for lunch. BATTING: Moeen Ali 23 (45), Stuart Broad 10 (30)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE ENGLAND 214/7 in Overs 53: Runs are coming for England only in the passion the tailenders get. The batsman in Moeen Ali has been completely overshadowed by the extra burden of spin, and amidst edges and missed he has been able to put his bat on the ball a few times. Broad has done well, I must say even better than Moeen to keep Australia at bay. England lead by 78 runs. BATTING: Moeen Ali 18 (35), Stuart Broad 8 (24)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE ENGLAND 204/7 in Overs 49: England have started looking for those risky singles, as the first thing they would be wanting right now is take their lead past 100-run mark. Australia have caused them a lot of damage today. England’s lead is of 68 runs. There are still 25 minutes left in the first session. BATTING: Moeen Ali 12 (20), Stuart Broad 6 (13)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE ENGLAND 190/7 in Overs 45.3: Three in three for Nathan Lyon! The Aussie spinner has been the silent assassin for Australia this innings as he traps Jos Buttler in front of the wickets. A delivery before that, Australia had wasted a review as Lyon attacked the pads from round the wicket. The next delivery was the same. Buttler missed, and more to England’s horror the replay showed it was missing the wickets. BATTING: Moeen Ali 4 (12)

OUT! Jos Buttler lbw Nathan Lyon 9 (38)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE ENGLAND 190/6 in Overs 45: Moeen Ali has walked out to bat and has survived one full over from Mitchell Johnson. Australia have a bit of a worry in Mitchell Starc, who was wayward throughout his spell despite that wicket of Joe Root. Nathan Lyon has been introduced into the attack now. England lead by 54 runs. BATTING:  Jos Buttler 9 (35), Moeen Ali 4 (12)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE ENGLAND 182/6 in Overs 41: There it is! England throwing away all the good work done by James Anderson and company yesterday. Mitchell Starc has bowled poorly today, and he bowls one really well outside off. Root chases it, gets an edge and Adam Voges takes a good clean catch in the slips. England stutter, they have lost their batting mainstay with the lead not even being 50. BATTING:  Jos Buttler 7 (23)

OUT! Joe Root c Adam Voges b Mitchell Starc 63 (75)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE ENGLAND 178/5 in Overs 40: Joe Root and Jos Buttler are leading England’s revival at Edgbaston. The Aussie bowlers are not looking with a bunch having a lot of spunk, Starc is struggling for line and he is consistently leaking runs. . BATTING:  Joe Root 59 (69), Jos Buttler 7 (23)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE ENGLAND 163/5 in Overs 37: Mitchell Starc is wayward and England are getting some easy runs off him. Buttler is off the mark after a slow start. England have done well to tackle the pressure so far. They lead by 27 runs now. BATTING:  Joe Root 54 (57), Jos Buttler 1 (17)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE ENGLAND 159/5 in Overs 34: Something for England to smile about this morning as Mitchell Starc is wayward and Root makes most of it by bringing his 13th half-century in Test cricket. England will be desperate to have Root batting all day today, and try and buildup their lead. BATTING:  Joe Root 51 (50), Jos Buttler 0 (7)

What a start this has been for Australia! The possibilities of England ‘out-batting’ Australia in this Test have gone down now with not much batting left in the hosts’ ranks. They will now, instead, would like to go into the shell and try and resist the Aussies for sometime now. Well, Mitchell Johnson is now the only 5th Australian bowler in their Test cricket history to take 300 wickets, and the second Australian only to take 300 wickets and score more tan 2,000 runs in Test cricket.

LIVE CRICKET SCORE ENGLAND 142/5 in Overs 30.5: Mitchell Johnson you beauty!!! Another snorter to another Englishman who has no answer to a nasty short ball directed on his head. Ben Stokes tries to move away from the bouncer but the ball brushes his gloves and lands safely in Peter Nevill’s hands. What a start for Johnson and Australia! They are right back into this contest. England lead by 5 runs but have lost the advantage. Not much batting left, it can be assumed that there will be no first innings lead. BATTING:  Joe Root 35 (37)

OUT! Ben Stokes c Peter Nevill b Mitchell Johnson 0 (2)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE ENGLAND 142/4 in Overs 30.3: WICKET! Mitchell Johnson has delivered a huge blow to England first up as he bowls a snorter to Jonny Bairstow, who has no answer to the short delivery fired at his head. England lose yet another wicket, they need strong partnership to maintain command. BATTING:  Joe Root 30 (35)

OUT! Jonny Bairstow c Peter Nevill b Mitchell Johnson 5 (12)

LIVE CRICKET SCORE ENGLAND 137/3 in Overs 30: Josh Hazlewood begins the proceedings for the day by beating Jonny Bairstow on the first ball. The Aussie pacer got some movement in the first over and looking for a fuller delivery he bowled one in to the zone and Bairstow hit him for a four. England have taken lead now. BATTING: Jonny Bairstow 5 (11), Joe Root 30 (35)

The players are out there in the middle, for England Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow. England will need 3 more runs to take lead in this first innings. Australia, at least 3 wickets to make a comeback in this Test.

In their reply, England continued to have a floundering top-order as both Adam Lyth and Alastair Cook fell after getting starts. Lyth is turning out to be a worry for England. Ian Bell, playing in front of the home crowd, did score a half-century but he too played an atrocious stroke to get out. ALSO READ: James Anderson shows pace and bounce is not the only way to take wickets

Bell scored a fine half-century and it looked like England will finally get some assurance from their top-order. However, a poorly calculated stroke looking for a big hit against Nathan Lyon did him in as Bell failed to clear the ropes. ALSO READ: Michael Clarke’s captaincy in Ashes 2015 lacks flexibility

Australia still have a chance to make a comeback, because England were 133 for 3, trailing by 3 more runs. If Australia are able to get 2-3 quick wickets, the hosts will lose the advantage. This, I reckon, is the only way for the tourists to make a comeback. At stumps on a rain-affected first day, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow were at the crease.
