A very good day for England, they bowled well in the first session and then the 177-run stand between Alastair Cook and Adam Lyth has put them on top. Cook fell for 75 but Lyth went onto score his maiden Test ton to but the Kiwis came back hard to price out three wickets in last hour to share honours. Read our day’s report here.

Both the new ball bowlers for New Zealand are did their best to beat both Ian Bell and Ben Stokes with a few good ones. Ben Stokes got an edge which was snaffled by Mark Craig at second slip, the Kiwis are right back in the game big time. Jos Buttler has come out and got going with a couple of clips.

Tim Southee strikes too, he gets Joe Root to edge one behind for Luke Ronchi to take a good one going to his right. This is superb period of play for the Kiwis and they are just about in the game. Ben Stokes is the new man in. New Zealand have six more overs to pick out a few more and boy, will they love it?

Ian Bell gets off the mark with a sumptuous loft over the head of the bowler while Gary Ballance looks for momentum with the new ball due now. New Zealand will wish if they get past either of them, the honours might still be even. Brendon McCullum continues to attack with three slips, gully, cover, cover-point in place. The clouds are in, ripe time for a burst one could say.

And out of nowhere, New Zealand have a wicket, Trent Boult fired a throw at the striker’s end to catch Adam Lyth short of the crease. Oh dear, what a way to get out, what a time to get out. Gary Ballance had called him fora  single but Lyth was a touch slow and that cost him his wicket. But what a day for him though.

New Zealand are looking for wickets as the ball is starting to swing again. Gary Ballance has played and missed a few, with the new ball due in six overs after this, the Kiwis will want to strike and use the new nut at the new man in. Lyth continues to be solid at the other end though despite getting beaten by the odd one.

Adam Lyth has just brought up his maiden Test ton at Headingley. He brings it up with a nice clip through the on side. He gets a warm and loud applause from the crowd. What a moment for him, this is just his third Test and he has scored a ton already and is looking good for a daddy hundred. He had his moment of scare when he deflected his back foot defense back onto the stumps but the bails did not come off.

The ball is swinging a bit and Brendon McCullum has called back his pacemen to have a go here. Tim Southee and Trent Boult both are making life difficult not just for newcomer Gary Ballance but also for Adam Lyth who is going through a nervous period.

England openers Adam Lyth and Alastair Cook have already put in a record stand, the highest opening stand for England at Headingley as the Kiwis start the session with Tim Southee and Mark Craig. The bowling has been tight but the English openers are set and looking good.

We’re back for the final session of play. A big one for England, they can run away with the game here. Both openers are nearing their tons and will want to carry on from there. New Zealand will know they need to strike early to stay in the game.

Adam Lyth starts the post Lunch session with a cracking cut shot off Trent Boult. He continues to score runs as Cook patiently waits at the othr end. The Kiwi bowlers are getting good swing now with the older ball.

We’re back for the post Lunch session. Alastair Cook is just five runs away from being the highest Test run-scorer for England. He has Adam Lyth to give him company. Trent Boult to bowl first up. New Zealand will want wickets and quickly since the game could slip away from them if they do not strike early.


A very handy session for England, they did leak 53 runs to the Kiwis but bowled them out for 350 and now have batted well to see through to the Lunch session without losing any wicket. Trent Boult gets going with a slap through covers for a boundary to get off the mark. Mark Craig not leaving anything behind and carves one over point. Boult then finds the fence again with a slap pull over mid-wicket. Craig then also swings one over the head of Broad for a maximum. Broad though strikes to get his 13th five-wicket haul, as he had Boult caught at point by Lyth.

Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s coverage of the second day of the second Test between England and New Zealand at Headingley. This is Nikhil Popat, and I will be bringing to you all the live updates from the second day’s play.

England are on top after an impressive first day where New Zealand went after the bowling to score 297 in 65 overs. England are top because they have them eight down and will be looking to wrap things up very soon. James Anderson picked up his 400th Test wicket yesterday. Stuart Broad was the pick of the bowlers taking three for 83. England will looking to get batting today and bat well.

New Zealand will be relatively happy with their performance as they came back well from being two for two to post this total. They will wish the last wicket adds some quick runs and their bowlers bowl well. Tom Latham and Luke Ronchi batted well for them but both missed out on their tons.
