England recovered from 54 for four to 208 for five at the end of second day’s play of the second Test against South Africa at Lord’s on Friday.

Jonny Bairstow remained unbeaten on 72 along with Matt Prior who was batting on 22 at the end of day’s play.

Bairstow had added a 124-run partnership with Ian Bell for the fifth wicket to stabilise the England batting.

Earlier, Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel led South Africa’s bowling charge as they reduced England to 94 for four at tea.

Ian Bell and Jonny Bairstow were unbeaten at the crease when the second session of the day ended.

South Africa completed a good morning’s work when Morne Morkel bowled England captain Andrew Strauss off the last ball before lunch.

Strauss, playing his 100th Test and 50th as skipper, was clean bowled between bat and pad on his Middlesex home ground by fast bowler Morkel to leave England 29 for one in reply to South Africa’s first innings 309.

Vernon Philander’s maiden Test fifty helped South Africa further frustrate England with the bat.

Brief Scores: South Africa 309 (JP Duminy 61, Veron Philander 61, Jacques Rudolph 42; Steven Finn 4 for 75, James Anderson 3 for 76) lead England 208 for 5 (Ian Bell 58, Jonny Bairstow 72*; Dale Steyn 2 for 48, Morne Morkel 2 for 53) by 101 runs
