Live Updates

  • 11:00 PM IST

Kuldeep is the Man of the Match. He bowled phenomenally, finishing with 4-0-16-2.

  • 10:46 PM IST

India become the 4th team after Pakistan, Sri Lanka and South Africa to register 50 or more wins in T20Is. India have now beaten Australia in 7 consecutive T20Is.

  • 10:44 PM IST

There is a reason why Kohli went for the chase. Rain was always going to play a huge role. Rains always ends up favouring the fielding side. A deserving win for India. They deserved to win this contest.

  • 10:41 PM IST

And Kohli does what he does best. Finishes off in style. That’s over extra cover region and four. India have pulled off a 9-wicket (DLS) effort.

  • 10:41 PM IST

Kohli plays a short-arm jab. A boundary? No. Brilliant effort from Coulter-Nile. He saves 2 runs for his side. Kohli remains on strike. Now 2 from 3.

  • 10:39 PM IST

    Dhawan cuts. Gets 1.

  • 10:39 PM IST

We know our cricket history. Will it be Maxwell? Can he repeat his UAE feat? No it’s not him. Dan Christian is into the attack.

  • 10:37 PM IST

It’s Adam Zampa. Oh boy, Warner is a brave man. Anyway what options he has. Kohli whips the first through square leg for four. He beats Kohli with a faster one but that’s still a single. Will it be over in this over :D? Dhawan plays 2 dots. Dhawan is beaten and his SRH opening partner makes a valiant dive to catch it. Only 1. Kohli on strike. 6 to win. A six? Another dot. Only 6 from this over. India need 6 off final over.

  • 10:33 PM IST

Coulter-Nile to continue. Dhawan’s short-arm pull fetches him four. The over goes — 1 4 1 2 1 and 0. Coulter-Nile finishes his quota. India need 12 from as many balls.

  • 10:29 PM IST

Tye to bowl. Remember the new laws are not applicable in this series. Kohli greets Tye’s knuckle ball with a step out straight bat, rather just an extension of his defence. What a shot! He gets a single. Dhawan now pulls a slower short ball to the fence. After the halfway mark (yes!) India are 27 for 1. They need another 21 from 18 balls.

  • 10:25 PM IST

An eventful over. Dhawan, Kohli survive run-out scares. Dhawan gets an inside edge on to his pad. So no LBW. He ends the over with a chip over the bowler for a boundary.

  • 10:24 PM IST

Coulter-Nile starts with rank bad ball. It’s on the pads and Rohit hammers it in the long leg region for a six. India shoot up to 11. The next ball Coulter-Nile cleans up Rohit. He goes for a slog, misses and the middle-stump is knocked out. Dhawan is almost run-out. He had not grounded his bat.

    OUT! Rohit Sharma b Nathan Coulter-Nile 11(7)
  • 10:19 PM IST

Behrendorff’s first ball is a victim of Rohit’s sinew wrists. It’s placed for a boundary. But the bowler comes back well to bowl 3 dots. A single. And the bowler beats Dhawan’s bat. India need 43 off 5 overs now.

    Here’s the innings report.

  • 10:17 PM IST

The first 2 overs will be Powerplay. Only one bowler will be allowed a maximum of 2 overs while others have to bowl just 1. It’s a tricky chase. It shouldn’t be a problem, really. But 1 or 2 good overs can make the run-rate soar up. Warner was at the receiving end during the IPL play-off. In all likelihood Warner will lose his first game as Australian captain. But we all know it’s a funny game.

  • 10:11 PM IST

It looks like the play will start soon. The covers are off. Players are on the ground. Sand is being put in several patches. Warner, Kohli and the umpires have DLS sheets in hand. India need 48 from 6 overs.

  • 9:45 PM IST

There will be a pitch inspection at 10.05 and we will get a clearer picture then. The rain has slowed down. Let’s hope for resumption.

  • 9:17 PM IST

It is still raining. The cut-off for a 5-over game will be 10.18 pm. It is almost an hour since the play has been stopped. For a 5-over game, India’s target will be 41.

  • 8:37 PM IST

Umang Pabari tweets: This is the first time that Australia have lost six wickets as bowled in a T20I match.

  • 8:21 PM IST

Rain has stopped the proceedings at Ranchi. The covers are on.

  • 8:21 PM IST

Why should the captain miss out all the fun? Christian plays straight and challenges Kohli’s arm. He gets a direct-hit from long-off. Christian the IPL, CPL and Natwest T20 Blast hero departs for 9. Two balls later, Zampa gets an inside edge for a boundary.

OUT! Daniel Christian run out (Virat Kohli) 9 (13)

  • 8:13 PM IST

Bumrah back. Expected. And as expected he strikes straightaway. The ball zoots in through Paine’s defences. it dismantles the stumps. It hurries the batsman and keeps slightly low. Indians are making mockery of this Australian side. A full-length ball, of yorker mould which is too good for the likes of Coulter-Niles. Bumrah hears the timber sound again. Tye is greeted with a yorker that he manages to fend. 2 from the over.

OUT! Tim Paine b Jasprit Bumrah 17 (16)
  • 8:09 PM IST

Kuldeep finishes with 4-0-16-2. He might go on to win the Man of the Match. Bhuvi is back into the attack. He almost cuts Christian half with pace. Lucky that did not kiss the stumps. Paine finds the cover boundary and pulls another for six. The ball is stopping on to the batsman. It was a good shot. 12 from Bhuvi’s over.

  • 8:01 PM IST

Australia had almost lost 6. Paine tries to work Chahal away on the leg side and gets a leading edge straight to the bowler. It was a tough chance and Chahal almost nabs it. Now at the Dhoniland, Dhoni misses a stumping. Unbelievable. Again! Paine pulls the next ball straight to the deep midwicket and Bhuvi spills a sitter there. Chahal finishes with 4-0-23-1. 3 chances goes begging that over.

Will Australia make something of this spilled chances?

  • 7:57 PM IST

What just happened there? Pandya now skids one to the stumps. A very soft dismissal. Pandya bowls in on the shorter side, Head goes for a whip in the midwicket region, only to inside edge it on to the stumps. Australia further stutter.

OUT! Travis Head b Hardik Pandya 9 (16)
  • 7:53 PM IST

Henriques gets a boundary of Pandya to break the shackles. Henriques goes for an aerial. Steps out and Kuldeeps shatters his stumps. What’s wrong with Australia? They have just given up it seems. It’s not a easy surface against spinners. The ball is gripping a bit. But that was a blind shot. The Chinaman fetches him a wicket. He now comes round the wicket against Christian.

OUT! Moises Henriques b Kuldeep Yadav 8 (9)

  • 7:42 PM IST

The spinners have put a brake on the scoring and now Kuldeep has cleaned-up Finch with a brilliant delivery. Finch was beaten by the flight, it pitched on middle and leg and straightened.

OUT! Aaron Finch b Kuldeep Yadav 42 (30)

  • 7:27 PM IST

So, it’s Chahal vs Maxwell. Round 3! Almost.

Maxwell looking to cut gets a thick edge to the thirdman boundary. And Maxwell goes. Chahal baits him with a short ball and there the midwicket fielder is there for that. And Maxwell’s intelligence sees him find that very fielder. This is bizarre from Maxwell. Chahal has go him 4 out of 4 in this tour.

OUT! Glenn Maxwell c Jasprit Bumrah b Yuzvendra Chahal 17 (16)

  • 7:25 PM IST

So three bowlers have been used by India in the Powerplay and all for 1-over spells. Finch butchers one straight for a boundary. India restrict Australia under 50 after Powerplay.

  • 7:22 PM IST

Bumrah now from another end. Meanwhile Maxwell keeps missing the attempted slog. 8 from the over. I am missing Nehra-ji but who does he replaces. Pandya to bowl from the other end and concedes a boundary off the first ball. A thick inside edge from Maxwell.

Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live blog of the first T20I tie between India and Australia. The match will be held at JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi on Saturday. I am Suvajit Mustafi, and will be bringing all the live updates from this tie. India will be eager to continue their good form and bag the T20I series as well. Australia, on the other hand, will want to undo all wrongs from the ODIs series and make amends. FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: India vs Australia 2017, 1st T20I at Ranchi

Out of 13 T20Is, India have emerged on top of Australia on 9 occasions. At home, India are yet to lose a T20I versus David Warner’s side. The last T20I between India and Australia, played in India, was during the WT20I 2016 in Mohali wherein India defeated Australia by 6 wickets.

Before this series, India had beaten Sri Lanka, while Australia’s last T20 assignment was also against the same side; they lost 1-2 at home.

Australia were seen practising against spin-bowling during net session, while India were denied any because of rains. Australia are likely to hand Jason Behrendorff a T20I debut, while India would gladly welcome Ashish Nehra back to the team. Steven Smith’s ouster due to injury will be Marcus Stoinis’ gain; the all-rounder will replaces him.
