The opening match of the four-match Test series is being played at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Ground in Pune. This is Devarchit Varma, and I will be bringing you the live cricket scores and updates from the second day’s play in the first-ever Test at this venue. At stumps on Day One, India had Australia reeling at 256 for 9 after the visitors won the toss and elected to bat. For India, Umesh Yadav was the pick among the bowlers as he returned with the figures of 12-3-32-4. Ishant Sharma began the bowling attack with the new ball, and bowled 11 wicketless overs on what remained a wicket which suited the spinners. However, Umesh was lucky as he found an inside edge off David Warner’s bat, dismissing the Australian opener for a 77-ball 38 which was studded with 6 boundaries. Umesh returned into the bowling attack later in the day to trap Matthew Wade leg-before, and dismiss the Australian tailenders in Stephen O’Keefe and Nathan Lyon on consecutive deliveries.

Australia began the day with a resolute opening partnership. Warner and Renshaw kept India at bay for about 27 overs, even though the hosts’ ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was in operation right from the beginning. Ashwin claimed the key wickets of Renshaw and Steven Smith, whereas Ravindra Jadeja accounted for Peter Handscomb and Mitchell Marsh.

India were able to spark a collapse in the Australian ranks as the visitors lost quick wickets in the second session. Shaun Marsh fell for a 55-ball 15, Smith was dismissed for a 95-ball 27, and Handscomb scored 22 off 45 balls before he was trapped leg-before. Mitchell Marsh and Wade were dismissed for single digit scores of 4 and 8 respectively.

Towards the end of the day, Mitchell Starc hammered a 58-ball 57 not out, which took Australia from 205 for 9 to 256 for 9 at stumps. Josh Hazlewood was unbeaten on 31-ball 1.
