So will India manage to take unassailable lead against Australia for the first time in their ODI cricketing chronicles? If they do so, they will edge past South Africa to become the No. 1 ODI side. This is CricketCountry’s live coverage of the third ODI between India and Australia at Holkar Stadium, Indore. I am Aditya Sahay, your host for the day.  Australia have never been tested like this against India. The world champions have to win this game in order to keep the series alive. Meanwhile, India have now won 11 games on trot across formats. Virat Kohli doesn’t mind boring cricket in order to win, and No. 1 ranking will be in India’s mind when they step on the greens for this encounter. India have won all their four ODIs at this venue. The game presents another opportunity to Kohli to score another hundred. If he does so, he will surpass Ricky Ponting and register his 31st ODI century, being only behind his idol, Sachin Tendulkar. MS Dhoni too has managed to reinvent himself in the format that he owns. Not only he is scoring runs but also his glovework has been impressive. Another stumping will help him breach the 100-mark for India. Indore is the venue where Sachin Tendulkar registered his 10,000th ODI run (though at Nehru Stadium). Virender Sehwag too went on to etch his record 219 at Holkar, Indore. We can expect the other two giants of Indian cricket to register their respective milestones here as well. The persistent rains in Indore has put the match under threat. The venue is expected to be packed for the encounter and we hope the weather gods are kind enough.

Live Updates

  • 9:27 PM IST

Rohit and Hardik were brilliant with the bat, Pandey and Rahane played second fiddle but still managed to look attractive.

On the other hand, Chahal and Kuldeep provided breakthroughs before Australia entered the death overs and Bhuvi-Bumrah took it off from thereon. A complete team effort.
  • 9:24 PM IST

    IND 294/5 (47.5)

  • 9:24 PM IST

That’s it. Dhoni and Pandey finish things off for India. Brilliant this from hosts. They were brought back by their spinners before pacers took charge in death overs. Rohit, Rahane started on a blazing note. Wickets tumbled twice, but Pandya and Pandey steadied the ship. Great to see the current crop of Indian youngsters perform with not much contribution from Kohli and Dhoni.

India make it 3-0. Australia were ordinary with the ball and lost plot in the death overs with the bat. Series sealed. India No. 1 ranked ODI side as well. Join us in B’lore to witness more Aussie thrashing hopefully 🙂
  • 9:11 PM IST

IND 285/5 (46). Pandya just departed after a magnificent 72-ball 78. What a player he is turning out to be. Self belief can take you anywhere. Fitting example. 5 fours and 4 sixes as he has taken India closer to a series victory.

Formalities lie in Dhoni and Pandey’s hands now.
  • 8:29 PM IST

    IND 206/4 (36)

  • 8:29 PM IST

What has happened here. A start-stop kinda innings since Rohit-Rahane departed?

Kohli and Pandya were looking comfortable before Agar deceived the Indian skipper by a good amount of flight. He was caught at long off. Kedar Jadhav followed suit. He played a loose cut shot, close to the body, got a thick edge and has perished for 2. Do Australia sense an opening? India still have Pandya, Pandey (century vs AUS) and ofcourse, MS Dhoni.
  • 7:54 PM IST

A swift partnership brewing between Hardik Pandya and Virat Kohli. Pandya has surprisingly been promoted to No. 4. It looks like India wants to demolish the Aussie spinners or just go on from here. Kohli timing the ball with ease, and the duo have taken the score to 184/2 (29).

  • 7:32 PM IST

Another one bites the dust…Rahane falls for 70 (76). He tried to work it around leg side but was beaten by pace of Cummins. So AUS coming back it seems.

Never say it is over, Aditya. Lesson learnt.
  • 7:23 PM IST

    IND 141/1 (22)

  • 7:23 PM IST

Jinxed. No, Rahane is still there. But Rohit falls after attempting his favourite shot; pull. Taken by Hilton Cartwright for 71.

  • 7:20 PM IST

What about sending Pandya at No. 3? Too many thoughts popping in my head. I shall keep shut and enjoy the proceedings from Indore.

  • 7:18 PM IST

IND 132/0 (20). It is just not working for Australia. Safe to say, well and truly over?

Rahane smacked another short ball to the fence with a sublime pull round the corner. Personally, I would want Rahane to slam a hundred. Poor guy does everything asked for, but will make way for Dhawan after this match, in all likelihood.
Remember, selectors will announce the team for the next two games as well after this match. If Pandey can get a decent hit (at No. 3?) tonight, it will be a pleasant headache for selectors.
  • 7:01 PM IST

Lots happening out there. But nothing for Australia. Smith brought back Cummins. Rohit started with back glorious boundaries. To add to Australia’s misfortunes, Agar went back to the dressing room. He has reportedly dislocated one of his fingers.

Rohit played the last ball close to his body and tried a late cut, found an edge, Handscomb dived but the ball fell off his glooves. Was a tough one, but AUS aren’t in a position to lose any chance offered by the Indian duo. IND 116/0 (17)
  • 6:49 PM IST

Rohit and Rahane are milking runs at will. There is no stopping the boundaries. Needless to say, scoreboard is moving quickly. Feel for the scorers.

Rahane 40*, Rohit 57*, IND 100/0 (15). Smith is helplessly rotating his bowlers. From Coulter-Nile, Cummins, Ashton Agar, Richardson and Stoinis, he has found no luck.
  • 6:32 PM IST

Rohit’s dancing down the track and pulling Richardson for a 103 meter six in the 9th over has to be the shot of the series. Phew, what the hell was that? He is in ominous touch today.

In process, Rohit now has 63 sixes vs AUS across formats; surpassing Brendon McCullum (61) and Sachin Tendulkar (60).
  • 6:31 PM IST

Runs coming thick and fast here for India. Is it so easy there? Nonetheless, the problem has been minimal support from the likes of Stonis and Richardson.

Rohit and Rahane have piled up 68 for no loss (10). Rohit is sending the ball out of the park at will, while Rahane is also matching up with cheeky and textbook shots. What a session of play this was for India.
  • 6:14 PM IST

A flick followed by an effortless straight six off Rohit Sharma’s blade to end the 6th over. India 34 for no loss. They are on the go now.

Just love to see Rohit bat when in such flow. Clinical is the word!

  • 6:09 PM IST

You cannot bowl short, on a flat track, to Rohit. He pulled easily off Cummins and picked up his first maximum of the evening. India 23/0 (5)

  • 5:50 PM IST

Pat Cummins keeps it tight. Only two coming off the first over. Both the Indian openers, Rahane and Rohit, off the mark.

  • 5:46 PM IST

    The chase unfolds…

  • 5:11 PM IST

End of AUS innings. They manage 293 for 6 (59 in the last ten). Ofcourse, they were in a position to muster around 350, but even 300 became tough as wickets kept on falling in the death overs. Credit to Chahal and Kuldeep with their strikes and Bhuvi-Bumrah handled the onus in the death.

AUS fall short of 300-run mark, but have a good score to defend. Pitch should remain the same; for batters. Let’s see what folds out in the final innings. Join us in half hour.
  • 5:00 PM IST

Forget 300 now. Some brilliant death over bowling by Bhuvi and Bumrah. Probably where they score more than Umesh Yadav and Mohammad Shami.

  • 4:59 PM IST

An entertaining 48th over. Bumrah did his job again by giving away only 4 runs. Nonetheless, it was Manish Pandey’s show at the deep which entertained the crowds.

Handscomb charged down the track, smacked it over deep long off, but was overshadowed by Pandey’s brilliance. He timed his jump, came back and completed the catch. Made it look so easy. Phew, modern-day fielders. AUS 276/6
  • 4:46 PM IST

What an emphatic turnaround this for India. Australia are struggling to get close to 300 now. Bumrah bowls a off-cutter which holds on to rattle Travis Head for 4. From 227 for 1, AUS have stumbled to 260 for 5.

The onus on Stoinis to take them forward. Bumrah ends a brilliant 46th over, conceding only 4 runs. AUS 263/5
  • 4:34 PM IST

With 6 overs to go and Marcus Stoinis and Travis Head in the middle, Australia will hope to add another 60-65 runs to reach a challenging score of 310. All 6 six overs will be bowled by Bhuneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah which will be a difficult task.

    AUS 255/4 | 44 overs.
  • 4:24 PM IST
OUT! Glenn Maxwell is stumped. Flighted ball outside the offstump, Maxwell misses and the rest is done by MS Dhoni. Maxwell made just 5 runs.
OUT! Steven Smith falls for 63. Kuldeep Yadav comes to the rescue. Unable to read the googly, Smith hands Jasprit Bumrah a simple catch at long off. Maxwell is now joined by Travis Head.
This is a min sort of a comeback by India.
    AUS 243/4 | 42.1 overs.
  • 4:18 PM IST

This is the perfect platform for Glenn Maxwell to launch an attack on the Indian attack on a flat-deck here at Indore. Steven Smith is well set and he will want to bat till the very end of the innings. Australia have did well to deny Indian spinners any wicket that has added pressure on the hosts.

    AUS 236/2 | 41 overs.
  • 4:08 PM IST

OUT! Kuldeep Yadav gets his man. Aaron Finch trying to heave the young leg spinner over mid wicket gets holed up as Kedar Jadhav takes a simple catch. Finch made a 125-ball 124 that included 12 fours and 5 sixes.

Smith is now being joined by Glenn Maxwell. It is ‘BIG SHOW’ time.

    AUS 224/2 | 38 overs
  • 3:59 PM IST

This has been a superb hundred by Aaron Finch. First Australian to this mark after 2009. This is his 8th ODI ton as well. Both Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav have been taken to the cleaners; specially Yuzvendra. India will need to pick a wicket before both Finch and Smith goes berserk.

    Aus 216/1 | 36 overs.
