India struck late before Ricky Ponting scored his 40th Test ton, his first in two years as Australia raced to 349 for four at tea on day two of the second Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday.

The host extended their lead to 158

Ponting, who was on the verge of a century going into lunch held his nerves to complete his ton before falling to Ishant Sharma minutes before lunch.

The 37-year-old scored 134 off 225 balls which included 14 fours.

He along with skipper Michael Clarke added ### in the post lunch session to strengthen Australia position.

The Indian bowling attack lacked discipline as the visitors were sent for a leatherhunt by Ponting and Clarke.
