Skipper Michael Clarke scored a century to help Australia reach 236 for three at lunch on day two of the second Test at the SCG on Wednesday. The hosts now lead India by 45 runs.

Clarke scored an unbeaten on 103 which included 14 hits to boundary, while Ricky Ponting was batting on 97.

The duo added 120 runs in the first session to extend the overnight partnership to 199 runs.

Zaheer Khan, who opened the bowling on day two, failed to add any wicket to his kitty of three bagged on the first day.

Ponting, who looked his old self, was particularly severe on Ishant Sharma, who was hammered to the boundary every time he erred on the line and length.

Introduction of Umesh Yadav seemed to put a stop on the run flow for a while but he suffered the same fate as the others pacers once the duo adjusted to his pace.

Brief Scores: India 191 (MS Dhoni 57*, Sachin Tendulkar 41, Virender Sehwag 30; James Pattinson 4 for 43, Peter Siddle 3 for 55) trail Australia 236 for 3 (Michael Clarke 103*, Ricky Ponting 97*; Zaheer Khan 3 for 54) by 45 runs.
