After opting to bat first, India left no stone unturned to dismantle the inexperienced Bangladesh bowling unit, so much so that they registered  356 for 3 at the end of the opening day. And in the thick of the things was captain Virat Kohli. He scored his 16th Test ton, equalling Sourav Ganguly’s tally. In addition, he has now scored a hundred against seven Test-playing nations. Kohli has not played a Test against Pakistan and Zimbabwe so far. If he does, then without a shadow of doubt he will reach the three-figure mark. To add another feather to his milestone, he became the first Indian captain to score over 1,000 runs in a season. That was that; Kohli at his usual best, reaching new milestones.

After India lost KL Rahul in the very first over, the onus was on the duo of Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara. As a matter of fact, it was a reminiscence of the partnerships they had stitched against New Zealand and England. The duo added 178 runs for the second wicket, taking India to a commanding position. In the process, Pujara surpassed Chandu Borde’s 1,604 runs, becoming the highest run-scorer in an Indian First-Class season.

Though Pujara perished for 83, Vijay went on to score his 9th ton. Kohli then took the centre stage and scored runs at will.

Apart from Taijul Islam (1 for 50), none of the bowlers could leak runs below 3. Mushfiqur Rahim tried as many as seven bowlers to put India on the back foot, but the visitors were too good for the fallible Bangladesh team.

With four more days to go, India will look to bat as long as possible, post mammoth total, and bowl Bangladesh out twice.

This is the 9th time India and Bangladesh have locked horns in the longest format, with India winning it on 6 occasions and the other two resulting in a draw. However, all eyes will be on Kohli, who looks good for yet another double-ton. Meanwhile, Ajinkya Rahane is unbeaten on 45.
