Live Updates

  • 4:37 PM IST

Live score: England 103/5; Stokes 12, Bairstow 12 – Umpires say Stumps! England trail by 352 runs. Day 2 belongs to India as well, for they will try to bowl out the English side twice. And given the way the track behaved today, the spin trio of Ashwin, Jadeja and Yadav will have a good time catching the opposition in trance. Well, that is it from us. See you tomorrow at 9.30 am.

  • 4:27 PM IST

Live score: England 97/5; Stokes 12, Bairstow 7 – India are desperate for more wickets. Jayant Yadav has been right on the money so far. Has been bowling in the right channel, troubling the batsmen more often than not. One more wicket before the umpires call it a day…

  • 4:04 PM IST

Live score: England 87/5; Stokes 3, Bairstow 5 – It is all about handling pressure now. Stokes and Bairstow will have to exhibit magnificent show of character to keep England on course.

  • 3:44 PM IST

Live score: England 82/5; Stokes 1, Bairstow 1 – Half the side is back in the pavilion, for Jayant Yadav picks his maiden Test scalp, trapping the in-form Moeen Ali in front. England in trouble.

  • 3:27 PM IST

Live score: England 80/4; Ali 1, Stokes 1 – Both Kohli and Root are playing their 50th Test. Kohli, as we know, scored a magnificent 167. Root started of well, scoring his 24th fifty. On the other hand, look at Kohli’s conversation rate. He has 12 fifties and 13 centuries. To put things into perspective, Kohli did not play a rash shot in the first innings, eventually scoring a daddy hundred. Root emulated the same but played one in the air and ended his innings on 53. Wait, it’s too early to judge.

  • 3:20 PM IST

Live score: England 77/3; Root 51, Ali 1 – Loud shouts, half shouts, inside-edges, crowd roaring, umpires under pressure… The atmosphere is electric at Visakhapatnam. The English batsmen are dancing to Ashwin and Jadeja’s tunes.

  • 3:08 PM IST

Live score: England 72/3; Root 47 – Forward short-leg, leg-slip and a slip… Ashwin bowls negative line, down the leg-side, making him close the face of the bat. Sets him up… Bowls one on middle, spins it away from him, and uproots the off-stump… England lose their third wicket…

  • 2:50 PM IST

Live score: England 54/2; Root 37, Duckett 2 – India sent Hameed back to have some more tea. Mix-up with Root cost him his wicket. Excellent work by Saha. Reminiscence of Dhoni. Does not take the throw on the bounce. Instead runs forward and back-throws it onto the stumps. Brilliance-personified.

  • 2:16 PM IST

Live score: England 34/1; Hameed 9, Root 23 – And it is chai-biskoot time. And as the Angrez would say, “Would you fancy biscuits with tea, Sire?” Other than Cook’s wicket, nothing bothered the English batters. Joe Root, especially, looks in ominous touch. Now I crave for tea. So, if Pooh has tea in an Ottoman umpire, will they call him Tea-Pooh Sultan? No? Okay. Bye.

  • 2:04 PM IST
Live score: England 32/1; Hameed 9, Root 21 – Kapil Dev and Aakash Chopra have been obsessing over Cook’s dismissal, calling stumps as furniture. And I realised how terrible journalist I am, for it is mentioned in the glossary of cricket terms. But furniture? 😮 Also, it is Hindi commentary. Shouldn’t they be saying असबाब, फर्नीचर, माल, सज्जा, सामान, चल or सामग्री? 😮
  • 1:39 PM IST

Live score: England 20/1; Hameed 5, Root 13 – 7 overs of pace-bowling. 30 minutes to tea and it’s time Kohli brings spinners into the attack. As a matter of fact, the English spinners generated fierce spin this morning. Hence, it would be fascinating to see what Ashwin, Jadeja and Jayant do on this track.

  • 1:20 PM IST

Live score: England 6/1;Hameed 2, Root 2 – That’s why Kohli sticks to his pacers with the new ball. Shami castles Cook. Shami knocks Cook over. Shami dismantles Cook’s defence. Shami breaks the stumps in two pieces. I can’t get over it. The ball lands on the seam and holds its line. That was unplayable. Even the batsman who has scored close to 11,000 runs could not tackle it. Absolute jaffa, it was.

  • 1:09 PM IST

Live score: England 0/0; Cook, Hameed 0 – Seldom do we see Kohli opening the bowling with a spinner, something Dhoni did time and again and often in home series. He starts off with Shami, who almost got the better of the staggering Cook. Meanwhile, Aakash Chopra is trying to make puns, playing with words such as Pakwaan, Swaadisht, Chef… Stop him!

  • 1:05 PM IST

    **England innings**

  • 12:55 PM IST

Live score: India 455; Shami 7 – Jayant Yadav falls for 35. But that was not a concern, as No. 10 and 11 exhibited an entertaining show at Visakhapatnam. While Umesh scored two powerful boundaries off Moeen, Shami smashed a six off the very first ball. He might as well be the first No. 11 batter to do so. All the same, in the process of playing big shots, Umesh holed one to deep mid-wicket, ending India’s innings at 455.

  • 12:36 PM IST

Live score: India 428/8; J Yadav 27, U Yadav 0 – Ashwin goes for 58. I had an epiphany that whoever I shower heaps of praises on instantly departs. However, Stokes deserved a wicket. Bowled exceedingly well today. He, in fact, deserved Kohli’s wicket yesterday as well. Has been trying no. of variations on this bowling-friendly wicket.

  • 12:21 PM IST

Live score: India 422/7; Ashwin 53, Yadav 27 – Another Test fifty for Ashwin. Just when I thought Pujara has the opportunity to win the Man of the Series award, Ashwin steps up and plays another vital knock. In addition, the track has been offering something for the spinners. We might see the star all-rounder take bulk of the wickets and yet another Man of the Series.

  • 11:34 AM IST

Live score: India 415/7; Ashwin 47, Yadav 26 – Lunch time, folks! Session equally belongs to Ashwin and England. Wickets of Kohli, Saha and Jadeja put India in a spot of bother but Ashwin added 52 runs with debutant Yadav for the eight wicket. Well, while I have Anda Curry for lunch, you find something to eat. Do not close the tab. I’ll be back post lunch.

  • 11:18 AM IST

Live score: India 398/7; Ashwin 38, Yadav 18 – Ashwin has most Man of the Series awards. Even more than Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag. He impacts the series. Forget the wickets column. He scores handy runs down the order — runs that do not get noticed enough, for they do not come from Kohli’s bat. Hence, I always wondered if Ashwin is a bigger star than Kohli.

  • 10:57 AM IST

  • 10:54 AM IST

Live score: India 374/7; Ashwin 25, Yadav 9 – In 2011 WC final, Virender Sehwag asked for a review even before umpire raised his finger. At the other end was the great Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar. The usual norm is to ask your batting partner whether to take the review. But Sehwag was different. He believes in “suno sabki, karo apni.” And then there is Jadeja. He asked Ashwin, who blatantly refused, thinking it was out. The replay showed otherwise. The ball was missing leg, and the rest is history.

  • 10:41 AM IST

Live score: India 365/7; Ashwin 23,Yadav 2 – And I jinxed my favourite player. Saha goes for a well-made 3. Yes, I am allowed to be biased. Don’t judge me. Well, well, well… As I write this, Ali dismisses duck for a Jadeja. India in trouble.

  • 10:31 AM IST

Live score: India 363/5; Ashwin 23, Saha 3 Saha’s last 10 innings read: 23*, 40, 47, 104, 14, 0, 54*, 58*, 35, 9. Mind you, he bats lower down the order when more than half the side is back in the pavilion. To make matters more challenging, he has to bat with the tail. Ideally, he should be batting up the order. He deserves more than what is being offered to him. But the need of the hour demands something else, and Saha is considerate enough to adjust to whatever is asked of him.

  • 10:22 AM IST

Live score: India 355/5; Ashwin 19, Saha 0 – Wriddhiman Saha the next batsman. India’s match-winner, unsung hero, joker of the pack. Oh, btw, Kohli departs for 167. Fails to become the third captain to score three double-tons in a calendar. Yes, he fails. 😮

  • 10:09 AM IST

Live score: India 340/4; Kohli 163, Ashwin 11 – I always wondered if Ashwin is a bigger star than Kohli in the longest format. For that matter, Kohli may have grabbing headlines with his blade but Ashwin has most Man of the Series awards than any Indian cricketer. In that case, he has raced past Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag.

  • 10:02 AM IST

Live score: India 340/4; Kohli 163, Ashwin 11 – It was a new ball and looks like even the ball could not handle Kohli’s boundaries. Delay here with change of the ball. And yet another record by Kohli.

  • 9:54 AM IST

“Chinese calendars mein snake year, goat year hota hai. India mein Virat Kohli ka saal hai.” – Aakash Chopra

  • 9:45 AM IST

Who let the dog out? No, wait. Was it karma? 😮

  • 9:37 AM IST

Live score: India 323/4; Kohli 151, Ashwin 6– James Anderson comes into attack. Kohli on strike. Another double-century on the cards. Nothing new. Same old story.

Hello and Welcome to CricketCounry’s coverage of second day’s play of the second Test between India and England at Vishakapatnam. I am Kaustubh Mayekar and I will be bringing you all the updates of the day’s play. India finished Day One at 317 for 4, with their skipper Virat Kohli top-scoring with an unbeaten 151. He was well supported by Cheteshwar Pujara, who scored 119, before edging one to the wicketkeeper off James Anderson. Kohli and Pujara resurrected the Indian innings with a 226-run stand for the third wicket after India were reduced to 22 for 2 in the fifth over of the match. LIVE Cricket Scorecard: India vs England 2nd Test at Vizag

Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin are the two overnight batsmen and will look to pile on the runs on Day Two. India will be looking at a score of over 500 and ensure that they have to bat just once on this pitch. The pitch was good for batting on Day One, but the pitch had some uneven bounce, with a few bouncing way more than expected, while some keeping extremely low. We may see more of this as the game progresses. There was a hint of turn for Adil Rashid and India with three spinners in their ranks, will look to exploit the surface on days two and three, when the pitch will offer much more assistance to them.

India have Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and debutant Jayant Yadav as their three spinners for this match. Jayant gets into the side in place of leg-spinner Amit Mishra. Jayant being an off-spinner will be able to take the ball away from the left-handers and England have as many as six left-handed batsmen in their side. Jayant has been a prolific performer for Haryana in the domestic circuit. He made his One-Day International (ODI) debut at the same venue against New Zealand a few weeks back.

England on the other hand will have to try and get rid of Kohli, who is looking in sublime form and also the lower-order of the Indian batting line-up, who can be more than handy at times. Anderson on his return to international cricket, has been the pick of the England bowlers, picking up three out of the four wickets to fall on Day One. He will once again be key to England’s hopes of restricting India to a low score on Day Two. England’s spinners have not been able to do much damage. Moeen has gone for over four and a half runs an over. Rashid and Zafar Ansari have conceded runs at 3.27 and 3.75 runs an over respectively. They however might get much more assistance on Day Two.

India had won the toss and elected to bat first. They made a couple of changes to their playing XI. They got in Rahul in place of Gautam Gambhir. Jayant was roped in as the third spinner in place of Mishra. England made just the one change. Anderson came into the XI in place of all-rounder Chris Woakes. The five-match series is currently level at 0-0 as the first Test at Rajkot finished in a draw.
