I will be back with tomorrow’s live blog. India will be determined for a fightback and who knows, Virat Kohli might end up scoring another ton.
Moeen to bowl the last over of the day. India have done well to not lose a wicket. The crowd has been quite noisy today. There were more than 16,000 people in the ground. Rahul pushes for a single and India end with 60 for no loss. The final session has belonged to India.
So, we finally see Dawson into the attack. He is a left-arm spinner. Has a quite unusual action, not very different to Zafar Ansari’s.
Four overs to go before the day ends. Rashid to continue to Parthiv. The fifty partnership comes up for the two.
Rahul steps out and smashes Moeen for a boundary. He has been guilty of throwing it away quite often. He should look to play till the end of day’s play today.
Not bad. England have put up a good show and if they can end up winning a Test, it will be a job well done.10 England players have scored a 50 this series. Only 3rd time in away series Eng have had 10+ half-centurions (v Ind, 1963-4; v Aus 1928-9)

Yawwwnnn.. Meanwhile, India have moved to 24. Watchful start from the hosts."After buying saree, how do you drape it? That's the question." #SanjayManjrekar chips in. Hard to keep ppl invested when u dgaf. #INDvENG

That too in Chennai. Ashwin won’t be too proud of this.1st instance of Ashwin conceding 150+ runs and getting only one-wicket in an innings. #INDvENG

Drinks has been called and its time for the players to take a few sips of water in the scorching Chennai heat.
Stuart Broad continues from the other end and produces another maiden over. England tightening the noose around India an will look to scalp a wicket with 11 overs left to be played.
Moeen Ali starts off with a maiden to Parthiv Patel. There was a slip in place as Parthiv Patel confronts all six deliveries without scoring a run.
KL Rahul is back in action and plays out the remaining over without any damage. Some spin into the attack; Moeen Ali puts in the hard yards.
KL Rahul looks in trouble, he is holding his right know and looks in pain. The physio is out and things are not turning out to be good for India as another player looks in discomfort. This could well be a huge blow for India.
One local boy didn't fulfill the expectation and the other local boy didn't come to bat because of injury
KL Rahul plays out the entire Jake Ball over cautiously and takes a single with a cover drive off the last ball.
KL Rahul looks in good touch and is playing out cautiously. He needs runs to his name and this surface is an ideal platform for him to do so. Broad goes over the wicket to Patel on the very last delivery.
STAT ALERT: Rahul/Parthiv is the 7th different opening pair in this series (4 by India, 3 by Eng) – the most in a series this millennium.

Jake Ball has started finding his length and has delivered a silent fourth over. Parthiv Patel, KL Rahul need to deliver as England have got some big runs on the board. Patel needs to calm his nerves down. England looking for an early breakthrough and one can expect Stuart Broad to step up.
India have got off to a cautious start and will need the openers to fire as Murali Vijay’s presence is under scrutiny. India are 8 for no loss after 2 overs.
Parthiv Patel smashes a boundary off Jake Ball, lucky though as the ball goes between first and the second slip.
KL Rahul, Parthiv Patel are opening the batting. KL Rahul wastes no time and gets off the mark of the very first ball.
As per the BCCI update, Murali Vijay is under observation by the physio. He hurt his left shoulder while fielding and India will be looking forward for his services.
Murali Vijay has injured his shoulder and that’s why we are seeing Parthiv opening the batting. After keeping wickets for 157 overs, he has to open now.
This inns the 2nd time an away team's nos.8&9 have both made 50 in India. Previously: Imran 135*, Wasim 62, for Pakistan in Chennai, Feb 87.

Bowled. Mishra finally gets one. That was a googly, Ball did not read it. It spun in sharply to shatter Ball’s off-stump. England fold up for 477.
OUT! Jake Ball b Amit Mishra 12 (18)So will Jake Ball have a ball with the bat again? Seems so. Deposits Ashwin out of the ground for another six.
Akshar Patel takes a brilliant catch but loses control and touches the boundary. Very good effort. SIX given. Dawson now has the highest score for a No.8 England batsman on Test debut. He goes past David Bairstow. Akshar goes out of the ground and we will see a substitute fielder for a substitute.
Will we see another partnership? These are some good numbers. Most Runs scored by No.9 batsmen in a TEST series in Asia:
340* This series
337 WI in IND,1983/84
310 Pak in IND,1979/80#INDvENG— Umang Pabari (@UPabari) December 17, 2016
Yes. Broad departs. Very good piece of fielding from Rahul. He first stops the boundary and then fires a throw in to Parthiv. Broad is short of the crease.
OUT! Stuart Broad run out (KL Rahul) 19 (23)Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live cricket blog and updates post for the second day’s play between India and England, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday. This is Suvajit Mustafi, and I will be bringing you the live cricket updates and scores from the match. It was England all the way on the opening day, as the touring side recovered from a shaky start to post a strong total on the board at the end of the first day’s play. England reached 284 for 4 at stumps, and with the wicket promising a lot of runs, they would like to add as many as possible.
Moeen Ali smacked a fine unbeaten century as he reached 120 not out at stumps, accompanied by all-rounder Ben Stokes, who is batting on 5. For India, Ravindra Jadeja was the pick among the bowlers as he returned with the figures of 3 for 73 off his 28 overs. However, the biggest surprise of the day was the failure of Ravichandran Ashwin with the ball, as the local hero went wicketless in his 24 overs in the day, off which England scored 76 runs. Ashwin will want to grab a few wickets on Day Two for sure.
The player of the day was certainly Moeen, who curbed his aggressive instincts to hammer his second century of the tour. Moeen batted with a lot of patience, and played aggressive stroke only when he was confident of hitting them with conviction. Moeen faced 222 balls, and struck 12 boundaries, which tells that he wanted to give himself ample amount of time in the middle and not make any hurry. He has been guilty of throwing his wicket away recklessly in the past, but none of this was seen when Moeen batted on the first day.
FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: India vs England, 5th test at Chennai
The other hero for England was their vice-captain Joe Root, who revived them once again from a perilous condition. Root got along with Moeen when England were reeling at 21 for 2, and added 146 runs for the third wicket to take his side to safe waters. Root fell for 88, once again agonisingly short of his century, which is certainly not first such instance in this series.
For India, it was a mixed day as Jadeja shone with the ball. Jadeja accounted for Alastair Cook once again, and provided two breakthroughs in form of Root and Jonny Bairstow — who scored a fluent 49 — when India needed the most. Bairstow played a stroke straight to extra cover when England were cruising. The hosts will be surprised with the lack of wickets for Ashwin on the first day, which began with Cook completing his 11,000 Test runs and becoming the 10th player in the process to do so.
Teams:
India: Murali Vijay, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (c), Karun Nair, Ravichandran Ashwin, Parthiv Patel (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Amit Mishra, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav.
