New Zealand will aim to produce an inspired batting performance on the fourth day, after being asked to follow-on in the first Test against India at Hyderabad on Sunday.

On the third day, bad weather played spoilsport in the post-lunch session after New Zealand reached 41 for one at tea in their second innings.

With thick dark clouds hovering over the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, the match was stopped 74 minutes after lunch as the groundsmen put the covers on.

Minutes later, heavy rains started pouring in with the ground resembling a pool, leaving little hope for a resumption of play on day three.

Brendon McCullum was unbeaten on 16 (59 balls, 1×4) while Kane Williamson was giving the Kiwi opener company batting on three (11 balls) when the match had to be stopped as the tea was taken early due to rain.

Brief Scores: India 438 (Cheteshwar Pujara 159, MS Dhoni 73, Virat Kohli 58; Jeetan Patel 4 for 100, Trent Boult 3 for 93) lead New Zealand 159 (James Franklin 43*; R Ashwin 6 for 31, Pragyan Ojha 3 for 44) & 41 for 1 (Brendon McCullum 16*, Martin Guptill 16; Pragyan Ojha 1 for 19) by 238 runs.
