India were 97 for two at lunch on the opening day of the first Test match against New Zealand at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal in Hyderabad on Thursday.

Sachin Tendulkar and Cheteshwar Pujara steadied India after they lost both their openers in the first session, as the hosts reached 97 for two at lunch, with Tendulkar and Pujara batting at 12 each.

India lost their first wicket in form of Gautam Gambhir, who fell to Kiwis pacer Trent Boult for 22, which came from 36 balls and four boundaries.

Gambhir added 49 runs for the first wicket with Virender Sehwag to provide India a steady start.

Sehwag, who got many lifelines, played a loose shot and missed out on a half-century as he fell for 47 to Doug Bracewell.

Sehwag cracked nine boundaries in his quickfire knock of 47, which came from just 41 balls.

Earlier, India captain MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat against New Zealand in their first Test match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal.

Pujara and Raina made a comeback to the Indian side.
