Kohli almost departed there. Looks to put away a slower bouncer, doesn’t connect well and substitute fielder Khaya Zondo, running in from deep square-leg drops a sitter. Well, how can you? Even if your opponent just needs 13.

  • 11:48 PM IST

Rahane falls. Looks to clear long-on but can’t. Superb knock from Rahane. He would have loved to finish it off but that doesn’t happen. India have pocketed the game nevertheless. Pandya comes out.

OUT! Ajinkya Rahane c Imran Tahir b Andile Phehlukwayo 79 (86)

Kohli gets into the act. He slashes over the point and gets a boundary through the backward point area. Follows the four with an on-drive for a single. He is a boundary away from his 33rd hundred. He drives Phehlukwayo though cover for a boundary to bring up his first ODI ton at South Africa. What a player! We are all privileged to witness one of the greatest ODI cricketers of all-time.

Another 34 runs from 10 overs. Kohli 9 short of a hundred and Rahane 23 short. Can both get to the three-figure mark?

  • 11:34 PM IST

Rahane clubs Morris over long-on for a six. Two balls later, there comes the ranp short. Brilliant upper cut and Morris goes for 15 this over. Rahane has made a strong case for No.4. The other competitors for this spot are Iyer, Pandey and Karthik. Rahane has done well to seal it for now. The question though lies: Is Rahane your man in chases over 300? For now, let us live in the present and enjoy this magnificent display.

Morris to Rahane. Stands and drives it past Kohli for a boundary. The mid-on fielder can just watch. This is pure class. Three boundaries in three overs.

  • 11:19 PM IST
And this guy isn’t a regular… That shows the strength of this Indian side.

  • 11:16 PM IST

Markram bowls a five-run over, while Morkel continues from the other end. Rahane pulls him away through deep square-leg for a boundary. That’s his 24th ODI. India need 80 runs off last 15 overs.

Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane’s last three stands in ODIs for the third wicket:
    104 v SA, Chennai, 2015
    109 v Aus, Melbourne, 2016
    111* v SA, Durban, 2018*

  • 11:00 PM IST
Phehlukwayo strays down the leg and Kohli pulls it for a boundary through long leg region. Makes it look so easy. Kohli is set to conquer South Africa with his first ODI hundred here. Rahane deposits Tahir over deep midwicket for a six. Last 2 balls, 10 runs.

  • 10:57 PM IST

The ball has been changed. It was wet and discoloured. Kohli and Rahane are making it look easy. India need 107 from 118 balls. The partnership is four-short of a hundred.

  • 10:39 PM IST

46th ODI fifty for Virat Kohli. It’s an ODI, it’s a chase and it’s a norm. He is the same guy who got injured, jamming his knee in the mud during South Africa’s innings. His knee was under ice-packs.

  • 10:36 PM IST

Rabada comes back into the attack. He was clocking serious pace in his first spell. He bowls a three-run over.

  • 10:33 PM IST

You have absolutely no margin of error when you are bowling to Kohli. Even if you are Tahir, you won’t be spared. A Tahir-googly is on Kohli’s pad and he just pushes it through fine-leg for a boundary.

  • 10:30 PM IST

Kohli has been using eye drops during the breaks. He has done it multiple times during his innings. Nothing seems to effect his batting though. He ends the Duminy over with a trademark flat cover drive for a boundary. The partnership is 60 at the moment.

  • 10:22 PM IST

Duminy into the attack. Brilliant. Rahane steps out and bang. Over the bowler for a boundary. The clouds have hovered. India are 113 for 2 after 21 overs. As per DLS method, India had to be 92. So they are 21 runs ahead.

Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live coverage of India in South Africa series. This is the first ODI of the six-match ODI series at Kingsmead in Durban. I am Suvajit Mustafi and I will be presenting to you all the updates from the first game. South Africa clinched the three-match Test series by 2-1. India ended ona high though, winning the Johannesburg Test that was played at an extremely tough track. The tour now moves to limited-overs leg. India have not won a single ODI in Durban. With 2019 World Cup just a year away, both teams will look to set a plan in motion. There is also the No. 1 spot up for grabs.

South Africa have not lost the last 17 ODIs at home and are currently the No. 1 team. India, on the other hand, have lost just seven of their last 25 matches. India are bolstered by the arrival of some fresh faces in form of Kedar Jadhav, Shreyas Iyer, Shardul Thakur, Manish Pandey and likes. Virat Kohli mentioned he is looking to build the core line-up for 2019 World Cup through this ODI series. He has already hinted on playing Ajinkya Rahane at No. 4.

It is to be seen if Rahane would come in place of Pandey. As for the bowlers, it is a fix between Mohammed Shami and Thakur. In case India decide to go to in with two spinners then both are expected to miss out.

South Africa, on the other hand, had an early blow. AB de Villiers, who injured his finger during the third Test, has been ruled out for the first three ODIs. South Africa team management might Aiden Markram in absence of de Villiers.
