Thisara starts his ODI captaincy career with a famous win. Suranga Lakmal is awarded the Man of the Match. Who else?

  • 5:29 PM IST

Rohit Sharma: “2 games still to go but having said that, we were not up to the mark with the bat. If we had 70-80 more runs, it could have been different. We won’t always play on flat tracks. Hopefully we can regroup and come back in the next 2 matches. [Dhoni] has done it for so many years. I wasn’t surprised. He knows how to bat in these conditions. [As captain] I have been in such situation where we have lost and same back well.

  • 5:20 PM IST

Angelo Mathews: “It’s a very pleasing moment. The past few months have not been good for us, but we have been confident. Suranga Lakmal set the tone for us and it was followed by all other bowlers. We did not think the ball would move around this much.

“I have always wanted to bowl. It’s just the workload management in Tests. I am happy to bowl in shorter formats.”

Yes, Mathews set the tone with the wicket of Dhawan. He also scored the winning runs.

  • 5:09 PM IST

Mathews punches it down the ground for a boundary. Sri Lanka win. The had lost 12 ODIs on a row. Here comes the big win. They have won by 7 wickets. This is also Sri Lanka’s first ODI win in India after losing last 6 ODIs.

  • 4:52 PM IST

Sri Lanka are getting easy boundaries. It’s just a matter of time. Adding to the woes, Dickwella gets an inside edge to the four. How many much shots we have seen today?

  • 4:31 PM IST

Pandya continues. Tharanga had been trying hard to edge one, playing with very hard bottom-hand. He finally succeeds. Dhawan fumbles but takes it the 2nd attempt.

OUT! Upul Tharanga c Shikhar Dhawan b Hardik Pandya 49 (46)
  • 4:22 PM IST

Pandya comes into the attack and as Arnold says, “The ball is moving. But off the pitch but off the bat.” What is Pandya doing? Tharanga has driven him for two gorgeous boundaries and then he bowls a wide five! Tharanga racing away with the game. 14 comes from the Pandya over.

  • 4:14 PM IST

Just like his variations, Bumrah has a variety of no-balls under his sleeves. This time he knocks off the bails with his legs. This free-hit too fetches Sri Lanka a boundary. Both times Tharanga and both inside-edges past Dhoni for boundaries.

  • 4:12 PM IST

A cracking stroke outside off-stump from Tharanga. He then gets another boundary on the leg-stump. India can’t afford to leak that many runs. 11 from the Bhuvi over.

  • 3:59 PM IST

Knocked over. Sri Lanka could have been 3 down. Well, Thirimanne has chopped that back to the stumps. Oh dear! Is it another no-ball? The angles don’t give a clear picture. I think this benefit should go to the bowler. It’s out.

OUT! Lahiru Thirimanne b Bhuvneshwar Kumar 0 (3)
  • 3:55 PM IST

Another wicket. Tharanga falls to a beauty from Bumrah. Can India turn it around here? Oh dear, it’s a no-ball. Bumrah and no-ball. Remember what Fakhar Zaman did?

  • 3:46 PM IST

Gunathilaka departs for 1. He looked to break the shackle with a heave and got an edge to Dhoni’s gloves. This is the start India would have hoped for.

OUT! Dasunshka Gunathilaka c MS Dhoni b Jasprit Bumrah 1 (11)
  • 3:42 PM IST

Width for Tharanga and he flashes it away for a boundary. Indian bowlers are getting some lateral movement. Sri Lanka have started better than India, are 7 for 0 after 3 overs. It has not been an easy outing for the Sri Lankan batters. A few plays and misses.

  • 3:29 PM IST

Umang is at it again: “112 is India’s lowest total in ODIs in India in 21st century.

Prev. 144 v Pakistan at Delhi in 2005.”

  • 2:51 PM IST

The best tweet I came across today.

Abhishek Mukherjee: “Dhoni probably stopped India from defaming Anushka Sharma today.”
  • 2:47 PM IST

Dhoni cuts, gets a boundary. Goes for a wild heave and the Sri Lankan captain gets the former Indian captain. He is caught at the cover boundary. He was eyeing over long-off. This has been one of the finest knocks from Dhoni. Sri Lanka need 113 to win. The bowlers will have something to bowl at.

OUT! MS Dhoni c Danushka Gunathilaka bThisara Perera 65 (87)
  • 2:43 PM IST

Chahal starts with a solid defence. Dhoni walks up to him. What is the message? Dhoni probably is telling him to not be lured by fending too much outside off-stump. Pradeep has targeted he off-stump well and fed on India’s confusion. Chahal intelligently sees away all six balls. Meanwhile, Pradeep finished with 10-4-37-2. Sri Lanka have finished off the quota of their lead pacers.

  • 2:40 PM IST

Abishek Mukherjee, CricketCountry’s editor, tweets: “Had I been Bumrah I would have not entered the dressing-room now.” Meanwhile, Dhoni has slammed a six. He is forced to play four dots and then gets a straight boundary. So Chahal will face the next over! Indian fans, have the nails in your mouth as it’s Pradeep’s last over.

  • 2:33 PM IST

So what will Dhoni do now? Pradeep is into the attack. Dhoni goes for a six. He has some fond memories in Dharamsala. Remember the IPL game in 2010 where he smacked Irfan Pathan in the last over to script a famous win? Dhoni goes over extra-cover this time. The strong bottom hand comes to play. He isn’t looking for any singles. Hopefully for India, Chahal will show better application than Bumrah. Now a full toss and Dhoni stokes it through cover for a boundary. That’s his fifty. The 67th of his career. Certainly, this has to be one of his finest. And he keeps the strike with a last-ball single…

  • 2:27 PM IST

What has Bumrah done? Why has Bumrah done that? He was doing his job to support Dhoni and in a moment of madness, he tries to go aerial and is cleaned up by Pathirana. This is poor cricket from Bumrah. Dhoni is livid.

OUT! Jasprit Bumrah b Sachith Pathirana 0 (15)
  • 2:22 PM IST

Bumrah’s resistance ends? He has been given out LBW. India have reviewed. India lose it. It has struck him way outside off-stump. Not a good decision from Anil Chaudhary. Bumrah and India survive another over. It was Dhoni who called for the review. The usual tactic is Dhoni playing most of the over and giving strike to Bumrah for a ball or two. This has been smart batting from Dhoni.

  • 2:11 PM IST

Dhoni isn’t taking singles. Short from Pathirana and Dhoni rocks on the back foot and forces one through extracover for a boundary. Dhoni has done it for India N number of times. Can he play one of the finest ODI knocks to bail India out?

  • 2:08 PM IST

Bumrah is doing a good job supporting Dhoni. He has dead-batted all balls he has faced even a rank-bad full toss. Meanwhile, Umang tweets interesting numbers

    MS Dhoni becomes
the second wicketkeeper to score 16,000-plus runs in international cricket
    after Kumar Sangakkara.

    Indian batsmen to
score 16,000-plus runs in international cricket:
    Sachin Tendulkar
    Rahul Dravid
    Sourav Ganguly
    Virender Sehwag
    Virat Kohli
    MS DHONI*”

  • 1:49 PM IST

Dananjaya strikes immediately. Kuldeep’s cameo ends. He was drawn in the front foot, the ball went past the edge and Dickwella effected a quick stumping. Kuldeep was out of his crease. What a shame. India 8 down. Bumrah is out in the middle.

OUT! Kuldeep Yadav st Niroshan Dickwella b Akila Dananjaya 19 (25)
  • 1:43 PM IST

We have seen three very good shots in the last couple of balls. Kuldeep’s superb timing gets him a boundary through the point. Then Dhoni bludgeons one in the backward point region for a four. And then a wristy stroke from the wrist spinner. Kuldeep elegantly glances one for a boundary. He is timing the ball well. India are 69 for 7 at the halfway mark (25 overs). Now time for spin. Akila Dananjaya gets to bowl.

  • 1:33 PM IST

The cheers reserved for the team’s 300 is being heard now. Yes, India have crossed 50. I am sure there will many tears of joy.

  • 1:29 PM IST

A beautifully timed boundary off legs from Kuldeep. And now an edge for another four. So India are not getting bowled out for the lowest ODI score. Now Dhoni gets an inside edge off Perera. The result is four.

  • 1:23 PM IST

23 dot balls. Dhoni steps out to Perera and drives past mid-off for a boundary. What a shot! Something the Dharamsala crowd have to cheer for. Six from the over.

  • 1:15 PM IST

Dinesh Karthik earlier today got an unwanted record.

Most balls faced for duck by Indian batsmen

18 – Dinesh Karthik vs SL, Dharamsala, 2017

17 – Eknath Solkar vs ENG, The Oval, 1974

16 – WV Raman vs SA, Johannesburg, 1992

16 – Sourav Ganguly vs SL, Colombo, 2001

Hello and welcome to the live blog of the first ODI between India and Sri Lanka at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala. I am Suvajit Mustafi, and will bring all the intriguing stats from the archive as well funny posts from the social media universe.

Kedar Jadhav was ruled out of the ODI series last evening due to a hamstring injury. India have marshalled the 18-year-old all-rounder Washington Sundar as Jadhav’s replacement. Although it puts India in a selection conundrum, it has opened gates for the likes of Manish Pandey and Shreyas Iyer. Considering Ajinkya Rahane will fill Virat Kohli’s void at No. 3, either Pander or Iyer is likely to replace Jadhav in the batting line-up. Dinesh Karthik and MS Dhoni will bat at No. 4 and 5 (not in the same order).

Sri Lanka, too, boast of a good side. They have a variety of all-rounders in their ranks. It will be further bolstered with Angelo Mathews rolling his arm again. He last bowled in September this year, against India at Colombo. He, however, has taken 11 wickets in his last 25 ODIs. He will be itching to make amends.
