Sri Lanka reached 149 for two from 25 overs, chasing a huge target of 305 against India in their opening match of the Asia Cup 2012 at Mirpur on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka openers Tillakaratne Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene provided their side a brisk start, adding 31 runs off first four overs. Jayawardene took the attack to the opposition as he hit four boundaries and a six to race to 24 not out.

Irfan Pathan provided India the first breakthrough when he had Dilshan caught by Virat Kohli for seven in the fifth over, to help his side gain some momentum.

After Dilshan s dismissal, Jayawardene teamed up with Kumar Sangakkara to take his side forward. The two experienced Sri Lanka batsman added 93 runs in 14.2 overs at a brisk rate of 6.48.

Jayawardene s fine knock of 78 came to an end when he was caught behind the wickets by MS Dhoni off Pathan. He faced 59 balls and hit 10 boundaries and two sixes.

Sangakkara remained unbeaten at 50, hitting two boundaries and a six, accompanied by Dinesh Chandimal at 12.

Sri Lanka require a further 156 runs to win with eight wickets in hand.

Earlier, Opener Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli slammed sparkling centuries as India posted an imposing 304 for three in their opening Asia Cup cricket match against Sri Lanka.

Gambhir (100), who struggled in Australia against rising deliveries on pacy tracks in the Test series, seemed comfortable in the familiar sub-continental environs as he and the in-form Kohli (108) batted together for 37 overs.

The duo added 205 runs for the second wicket at a brisk pace of more than five an over to steer the Indian innings after the early fall of Sachin Tendulkar. Both the batsmen, in fact, perished in the 43rd over, dismissed by Farveez Mahroof in the space of just one delivery.

Interestingly, both the batsmen completed their tenth ODI hundreds.
