    Some achievement, this!

Umesh bangs in short. Gunaratne pulls for 2. He has played a fantastic cameo. Now Mathews steps out and bang. Four. That is fifty for Mathews as well. What a comeback from the SL skipper on his comeback? SL complete a famous win at The Oval.

  • 10:45 PM IST

Bumrah’s last over. 1, 0, 1, 1. What is it with the defensive field-set? Are India giving away easy runs? Bumrah bowls out. 5 from the over. 8 remaining from final 2 overs.

  • 10:42 PM IST

  • 10:40 PM IST

Mathews cuts past Yuvraj at point for a boundary. A dot. Then places it on the leg-side for 2. Now even Mathews is limping. Well, who is surprised? But the chase really was surprising? How many of you had given SL a chance? This is now the highest second innings score in Champions Trophy history! SL need 13 runs from 3 overs.

  • 10:37 PM IST

Bumrah to bowl. Guess what? He has been swept over square-leg by Gunaratne for SIX! May be this is the final nail. He misses the yorker and then guides it in the thirdman region for 2. Another cheeky late-cut for 2. SL making it look easy. That’s 300 up. 11 already from the first 5 balls. Probably, SL were taken too lightly. What a show this has been! Bumrah almost cleans up Gunaratne but the latter survives. SL need 21 from 4 overs.

  • 10:31 PM IST

Bhuvi continues. A quick single from Mathews. Gunaratne gets 2. Gunaratne now picks the gap in the square leg region and it’s a boundary. 7 easy runs from the first 5 balls. This is getting easier now. Gunaratne now finds the gap through the gully and it’s FOUR. I think it’s time for Bumrah. SL need 32 from 30 balls. They have 7 wickets in hand.

  • 10:27 PM IST

The momentum breaks for SL. It’s 3 dot balls on a row. Umesh breaks the momentum now with a poor short ball. Gunaratnes pulls it away over long leg. It flies off the blade for a six. He gets a single now. SL have got 7 from this over. The weird thing is only Bhuvi has taken a wicket. 2 run outs and 1 retired hurt. We kept on praising Indian bowling attack. This isn’t what you would have expected out of them. Will we see SL fall the way SA way, the way they did in the 2002 edition’s semis after Gibbs was retired hurt.

  • 10:23 PM IST

Perera cannot run anymore. He is being helped out of the ground. Retired hurt for 47. Gunaratne in and Umesh to continue.

  • 10:21 PM IST

Bhuvi into the attack. 1, 1 and then a wide. Another full toss outside off, Perera smacks it to backward point for 1. He is limping. Not looking good for him. For India as well. Usually it is Mathews batting on one leg. Perera has the honours now.

  • 10:15 PM IST

Umesh continues. That’s bad bowling. Full and with the field in, Mathews smacks it over mid-off for a boundary. 2 singles and another scoop from Mathews for a boundary. Meanwhile, Kusal Perera is struggling. He is in discomfort. Has damaged his hamstring it guess. It’s Kusal Perera not Mathews, mind you. Umesh leaks 10 from the over.

  • 10:10 PM IST

Bumrah to continue. Shouldn’t India have reserved his overs? 1, 1, 1, 0, 1 and the last ball fetches Sri Lanka FOUR! Kedar misfields. Kohli is furious. 8 from the over. SL needed 7.5. It’s looking easy for them at the moment. The concerning bit is India’s best death bowler Bumrah has finished 8 overs. The partnership has raced to 59.

  • 10:05 PM IST

Umesh is into the attack. Kedar misses a direct hit. That would have been a run out. The next ball, Mathews whips a length delivery in the midwicket region for a boundary. Fourth ball, Umesh drops in short and Kusal Perera pulls it away for a boundary. Only England that too in this Champions Trophy have successfully chased over 300. Will this be another instance? Sri Lanka need 75 from 10 overs. The have 7 wickets in hand.

  • 10:00 PM IST

Isn’t Bumrah an asset to this side? Even at this juncture he sneaks out a 5-run over. He has gone for 28 from his 7 overs.

  • 9:51 PM IST

Mathews makes it look easy. Bad ball from Pandya and it’s pulled away for a boundary. 4, 1,0,1, 1 and 4. Perera ends the over by charging down and slapping it in the long-off region. SL need 95 runs from 78 balls. 7 wickets in hand. Possible? Very much. India need more wickets. Umesh is back in the attack.

  • 9:47 PM IST
10 from this over. SL need 106 from 14 overs. Possible. But run outs…

  • 9:44 PM IST
Kusal Perera employs a reverse sweep. It’s FOUR!

  • 9:41 PM IST
Another change in bowling as Hardik Pandya comes to bowl now. A decent over from him as only 3 runs came from it.

End of 35 overs, SL 206 for 3. Need 116 from 90 balls.
  • 9:39 PM IST

Now Jadeja is back in the attack but got hammered for a four by Kusal Perera. Skipper Mathews has arrived at the crease, which he was expecting few minutes back. 7 runs came from the over

  • 9:37 PM IST
Bhuvi comes into the attack and a brilliant throw from him in the 4th ball, ran out well set Kusal Mendis. Only 2 runs came from the over

OUT! Kusal Mendis run out (Bhuvneshwar Kumar) 89 (93)

  • 9:29 PM IST

Another over from captain Kohli. Only 4 came from it with a close chance of a catch as well. On the other hand, Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews was seen padding up and must be expecting to arrive soon at the crease.

  • 9:19 PM IST

Kedar continues. Eight from the over. Meanwhile, Kohli continues and it’s a 5-run over.

  • 9:15 PM IST

Kohli into the attack. But why? He bowls a rank-bad ball and is dispatched for boundary. That is out! Dhoni’s fast hands does the trick. Gunathilaka departs for 76. He is run out. That’s a shame.

OUT! Danushka Gunathilaka run out (Umesh Yadav / MS Dhoni) 76 (72)
  • 9:08 PM IST

Pandya into the attack. 3 singles of the first 3 adn then 3 boundaries. Mendis takes charge. Stragith, top edge and a swat. Sri Lanka are cruising at the moment. It’s Kedar Jadhav into the attack.

  • 9:01 PM IST

  • 9:01 PM IST

0, 6. That’s Mendis’ fifty. There is a Jayawardene-ness in his batting. The rest of the over goes 1, 4, 0, 1wd and 4. Gunathilaka gets into act. Reverse-sweep, cuts, everything. Jadeja has been plundered for 36 from his 4 overs. Bumrah meanwhile bowls a rare disciplined over. Just 2 from it.

  • 8:49 PM IST

Sri Lankan batsmen are making it look too easy at the moment. Mendis sweeps Jadeja in the deep midwicket region for a boundary. 7 from the over without much effort. Wickets should be the mantra for India now. SL need 202 from 168 balls at the moment. They have 9 wickets intact.

In match 8 of ICC Champions Trophy 2017, India will take one neighbours Sri Lanka at The Oval. I am Suvajit Mustafi, and will bring live scores, interesting posts from social media, and statistics in CricketCountry’s live updates for today. As I mentioned in the preview, India enter as favourites against the depleted Sri Lanka. However, regular captain Angelo Mathews will be back but, due to injury, will not provide his bowling services. Give Sri Lanka lost the first match against South Africa and are in a do-or-die situation, Mathews cannot leave anything to chance. Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara said that Sri Lanka need to go all guns blazing if they are to edge past a strong team such as India. FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: India vs Sri Lanka, ICC Champions Trophy 2017, Match 8 at The Oval

The weather forecast says that dark clouds will loom over, but the chances of incessant rain are remote. Sri Lanka, especially, will have to bowl out of their skin if they to stop the Indian batters from going full throttle.

Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan were back to doing what they do the best. They added 136 runs for the opening stand against Pakistan and laid a strong foundation for the middle order to exploit. Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, and Hardik Pandya added 154 runs off 100 balls to take India to a colossal 319 for 3 in 48 overs. The bowlers then played well in tandem and rattled Pakistan for a mere 164. As a result, there is no reason for India to tinker with their playing XI.

Sri Lanka may draft Thisara Perera to strengthen their batting. That said, they are likely to retain the same pace troika of Lasith Malinga, Suranga Akmal, and Nuwan Pradeep.

India: Virat Kohli (c), MS Dhoni (wk), Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Hardik Pandya, Ajinkya Rahane, Umesh Yadav, Yuvraj Singh

Sri Lanka: Angelo Mathews (c), Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Dinesh Chandimal (wk), Kusal Perera(wk), Kusal Mendis, Chamara Kapugedara, Asela Gunaratne, Nuwan Pradeep, Thisara Perera, Lakshan Sandakan, Seekkuge Prasanna, Lasith Malinga, Suranga Lakmal, Nuwan Kulasekara
