Mumbai: Feb 9, 2013.
Rest of India extended their lead to 413 runs in the Irani Cup against Mumbai after taking stumps on Day Four at 296 for four. The tie is now all but out of Mumbai’s hands with just one day to go.
Ambati Rayudu (118 not out) and Suresh Raina (40 not out) were at the crease when umpire’s signalled end of play.
Earlier, Rest of India batsman Ambati Rayadu struck a fine century against Mumbai to increase his team’s stranglehold over the Irani Cup.
The ton was Rayudu’s 14th in First-Class cricket. He had, in the first innings, crossed 5,000 runs as well. The century came from 190 balls including nine fours and three sixes.
The Rest reached 272 for four in 89 overs, their lead over Mumbai being 389 runs.
Rest of India took tea at 200 for three, with their lead over Mumbai now 317 runs, as Manoj Tiwary also scored a half-century.
Tiwary was batting on 66 runs, while Rayudu has 67 to his name.
Earlier, Ambati Rayudu struck a half-century as his team crossed the 150 mark.
Rayudu’s fifty came off 93 balls including five fours and two sixes
Mumbai bowler Shardul Thakur got the wicket of Rest of India first-innings centurion Murali Vijay (35) after the latter was dropped earlier.
Rest of India night watchman S Sreesanth (18) was run out from a fantastic direct hit from Mumbai’s Rohit Sharma at point from a difficult angle. The Rest went into the first drinks break of the day at 63 for two in 20 overs.
Immediately in the next over after Sreesanth’s fall, Murali Vijay (34 not out) was dropped by substitute Kaustubh Pawar, who is on the field in place of Sachin Tendulkar.
Vijay and Sreesanth brought up their 50-run partnership in the first hour of Day Four of the Irani Cup against Mumbai. The Rest are at 59 for one in 17 overs and lead Mumbai by 176 runs.
Rest of India put one hand on the Irani Cup after bowling out Mumbai for 409 on Day Three. A rush of blood among their batsmen proved to be Mumbai’s downfall as Sachin Tendulkar (140 not out) watched his teammates throw their wickets away.
After tea, Ankeet Chavan fell one run short of what would have been well deserved half century after he edged Abhimanyu Mithun to wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha. Mumbai were 360 for seven at that stage.
Chavan had forged a face-saving 103-run partnership with Tendulkar and looked disappointed as he headed back to the pavilion, with Mumbai still more than 160 runs behind Rest of India.
Dhawal Kulkarni was the fourth Mumbai batsman to join Tendulkar in the middle. No mug with the bat, the seamer stuck around with Tendulkar for a while and calmly rotated the strike.
Tendulkar, meanwhile, brought about the two shots of the day after having plundered RoI’s bowlers throughout the day. His 16th boundary came off Ishwar Pandey‘s bowling as he punched him down the ground in trademark fashion. The very next delivery was dispatched through the covers for four and gave photographers plenty of clicks. This was vintage Tendulkar.
Rest of India reached 27 for no loss, with opener Murali Vijay unbeaten on 18, at the end of the third day’s play and will look to extend their lead and take the game beyond Mumbai’s reach.
