CSK win by 8 wickets with 9 balls to spare

Fitting way to end the match. Dhoni unleashes the helicopter shot for a six and the next one stays hit, big one and the CSK players rush to the field. One-sided chase, KKR never looked like winning in the second innings. Second CLT20 title for CSK. only Mumbai Indians have achieved this feat.

Century for Raina with a single. He has taken just 59 balls for his knock and has put this final beyond KKR’s reach. An elegant innings. Last ball of the over from Chawla was lofted in the air and Raina picks six more. KKR fielders just waiting for this carnage to end. Eight runs needed in 12 balls.

Pat Cummins comes in to bowl. Starts with a short ball and raina pulls it to the deep for a single. Next one is a slower short ball but doesn’t get the line right. Wide. Next one is edged by Dhoni for four. The fifth ball is short and Raina guides it nonchalantly past fine-leg for four. 20 runs needed in 18 balls.

Raina dropped! Raina tried to chip it and Yusuf almost plucked a tough catch. Couple of wides and a few singles. The batsmen are sneaking a couple as well. 32 needed in 24 balls.

Poor Kuldeep Yadav. Gets selected in to the Indian team and ends up being hammered by Raina. The left-hander has made a habit of hitting down the ground. Another six. 41 needed in 30 balls.

McCullum hoicks one towards deep midwicket and Doeschate takes a regulation catch. Yusuf Pathan finds the breakthrough. 118 runs partnership in 74 deliveries — a match-winning stand. Dhoni is in to bat, maybe he can add some spice by playing a few dot balls!
OUT! B McCullum c Doeschate b Pathan 39(30)

First ball from Kuldeep Yadav is lofted by Raina straight back from Raina for six. Landed in the second tier. Clinical hitting from Raina, for the nth time played it over the bowler’s head. The last ball of the over gets similar treatment as the first one. One chance of getting him dismissed and Uthappa misses an easy stumping.

There doesn’t seem to be any twist in this final. Suresh Raina and CSK are cruising along. Gambhir persists with Surya Yadav and Raina collects the boundary at will. The fourth ball is hit through the line for four. Pierces the closed off-side field once again and collects four more.

McCullum is content playing the second fiddle and allowing Raina to score freely. Raina on the third ball plays another elegant looking shot. Well-fielded by Manish Pandey in the deep. Saved a certain boundary. On the last ball, McCullum slaps one over midwicket and Cummins settles himself underneath and takes the catch, tries to fling it in the air but ends up throwing beyond the boundary. Six more.

McCullum starts Surya Yadav’s over with a single. Raina on the third ball comes down the track and plays another fluent shot on the off-side for four to bring up his fifty. Couple on the fifth ball. Robin Uthappa appeals vociferously on the last ball for a caught behind but Dharmasena is unmoved.

Raina picks a single on the first deliver off Chawla’s over. The next ball is pulled uppishly by McCullum. Cummins comes running in and misses the ball among the lights and ends up evading and allows the ball to run away for four. The last ball of the over is pitched up and Raina plays it with the line over the bowler’s head for a six.

Gambhir pulls off a surprise. Brings Suryakumar Yadav in to bowl. Surprises with some turn. Just three singles from that over. Some relief for KKR. 112 runs needed in 72 balls.

McCullum sweeps everything against Kuldeep. Gets a single. The next ball is wide on the leg-side, Raina tries to guide it for four and almost gives a catch to Kallis. Taina is content milking Yadav for singles. 115 needed in 78 balls.

Two overs of spin has gone for 26 runs

Piyush Chawla comes in. McCullum plays a dot ball and follows with a single. Raina then hoicks one from Chawla in to the midwicket stands for a huge six. Fifty up for CSK, they are well on par with the required rate. Fourth ball was short and there to be hit, lucky to go straight to the fielder at square-leg. The last ball is on the leg and Raina just heaves it over fine-leg for a maximum. Partnership has already blossomed to 51 in 31 balls.

Kuldeep Yadav comes in to bowl. The first ball is swept, Suryakumar Yadav sprints, dives and allows the ball to pass through. Four. Next one is swept again. This was regulation fielding and he once again misses it. Horrible fielding. McCullum continues his sweeps. Expensive over from Yadav thanks to poor field from Surya.

First ball from Andre Russell is slaughtered by Raina for a maximum. Makes room and hits it over covers. Dot ball follows. The next one is on the leg-side and a vociferous appeal follows for a caught behind. But replays showed it might have come off the thigh pad. Impressive appeal from Uthappa and Russell! Single on the last ball. Eight from that over. 147 runs needed in 96 deliveries.

First ball from pat Cummins was at good length and Raina timed it sweetly past covers for four. A similar shot next ball but this time Gambhir had brought himself at short cover, stops it. Raina picks a single and calls for a change of bat. McCullum misreads this from Cummins, moves away and is hit near his thigh, leg-bye. A single on the fifth delivery as well.

Andre Russell starts from the other end. Two dot balls and then McCullum sets off for a tight single. Raina was going to fall short. The left-hander gets a single on the next ball with a flick. McCullum then places the fuller delivery towards cover. The last ball is a loose one and McCullum guides it on the leg-side for four.

Dramatic start to the innings. Dwayne Smith smashes past the bowler, Pat Cummins almost gets a hand to it. The ball hits the stumps. Next ball is short and wide, Smith slashes hard for four. Cummins gets a bit of swing, bowls a wide on the fourth ball. The next one is hoicked by Smith over covers for four. Smith changes his bat as the willow turned in his hand while playing the shot. The next ball he is bowled. Change of pace does the trick. It’s a well-directed yorker, he puts his bat down in time but the ball still had enough pace to disturb the stumps. Raina is the new batsman in. Gets an inside edge and it misses the stumps by a whisker and eludes the keeper as well to run for four.
OUT! D Smith b Cummins 8(5)

Nehra undoing some good work by Nehra. Two pitched up deliveries and Pathan makes good use of it to hit two boundaries off the first two deliveries. The third ball is fuller and Yusuf Pathan hammers it to wide long-on for a six. Couple on the next ball for Yusuf. Nehra completes his fifty! Pathan manages one more. Russell on the last ball of the innings finishes with a couple. 19 runs off the final over.

Wicket No 3 for Pawan Negi. the first ball is lofted by Manish Pandey on the leg-side. Dropped it short and gets the turn Didn’t get hold of the shot and McCullum takes another good catch. Pathan picks a single. Dot ball to Ryan ten Doeschate. But Doeschate’s stay ends, Negi tosses it wide outside off and Dhoni completes the stumping. Brilliant bowling from Negi. He gets one more, Suryakumar Yadav goes for a reverse sweep and gives a simple catch to short thirdman. Five wickets for Negi. Just two runs and three wickets in the over.
OUT! M Pandey c McCullum b Negi 32(19), R Doeschate st Dhoni b Negi 0(2), S Yadav c Nehra b Negi 0(2)

Oh boy! That was some bizarre stuff from Nehra. Bowled high and wide, Pandey just had to get his bat to it. Wide and a four. Five runs gifted to KKR. No run of the next ball. Nehra follows it with a length ball, Pandey comes down the track and slaughters it for a six over long-on. 150 up for KKR. Nehra follows it up with another juicy full-toss, he gives the deserved treatment. Six more. 17 from three balls already. Finally gets a yorker right. Pandey gets a single. Another full-toss to Pathan but he was caught by surprise, single to him. Pandey fails to get hold of a low full toss on the last ball. 20 from that over.

Gambhir’s luck finally runs out. Lofts in the air towards long-on and McCullum’s well-timed dive fetches a wicket. Yusuf Pathan is the new batsman in. Excellent over from Jadeja, just three from it. Suddenly KKR are looking way behind the score they would have liked to post.
OUT! G Gambhir c McCullum b Jadeja 80(52)

First ball from Dwayne Bravo, Gambhir clears his front leg and hits it between square-leg and midwicket for a six. Bravo bowls a wide next up. Gambhir is delivering when it matters. Gambhir again flicks one in the air towards midwicket and adds a single. Pandey pulls straight to midwicket for a single. Gambhir continues his fluent touch. Opens the face of the bat to the off-side ball and guides it past point for four. Once again adds a single next ball. The last ball is a slower one and Pandey manages to place it between thirdman and backward point standing inside the circle. 18 runs from the over.

Jadeja continues. Manish Pandey picks a single towards deep midwicket. Gambhir adds one more. Couple of more runs on the next two balls. A hint of desperation now visible on the face of the two batsmen. Jadeja has done well by bowling to his field.

KKR with power-hitters down the order have a lot of capability to score big. Singles on all the six deliveries. Negi’s tight line and Bravo’s over have put some brakes on KKR’s free-flowing innings.

Jacques Kallis goes for the big one against Negi and mistimes it, Nehra takes a good catch. Kallis got it off the toe end of the bat. two wickets for Negi. Manish Pandey is the new batsman in. He guides towards short thirdman, Bravo sprints, but misses the stumps, Gambhir survives again. Next ball from Negi, Gambhir is brilliantly caught by Faf du Plessis. He threw the ball in the air as he was crossing the fence and then caught it back. But replays showed he had touched the rope. Six for Gambhir. he has really brought a big back of luck.
OUT! J Kallis c Nehra b Negi 1(4)

Gambhir starts off with a dot ball against jadeja. The next ball he glances on the leg-side, it was heading straight to Raina but he pre-meditated and moved to his left, the ball passes him for a boundary. Jadeja is livid and has some words to say to his teammate. Gambhir has completed his fifty.

Pawan Negi continues. Leg-before appeal against Gambhir but he survives. Singles on the first two deliveries. Dot ball follows, next one is played by Gambhir on the offside, Ashwin throws back wildly and Negi misses, another run off a misfield/overthrow. Negi then finally finds a breakthrough. Uthappa comes down the track and misses the line of the ball. Dhoni completes the easiest of stumping. Kallis is the new man in, he goes for a drive and edges it to slips, Raina drops the tough one. The pitch is showing some signs of turn.
OUT! R Uthappa st Dhoni b Negi 39(32)

Vine Video of Dwayne Bravo’s missed catch

Jadeja comes in to bowl. Starts off with a dot ball. Gambhir on the next one lofts it but didn’t get good timing. Dwayne Bravo at long-on jumps and almost plucked off a stunning catch, but ends up dropping the ball past the fence. Six. The batsmen are content with singles in rest of the over.

Robin Uthappa has gone past Carter to become the leading run-scorer in the CLT20 2014.

Ashwin starts off with a dot ball and then adds a single. Uthappa attempts a reverse sweep and somehow manages to connect. Nehra’s comical dive slows down the pace off the ball, two more. But the next one was one more close run-out chance missed. If Raina had got a direct hit, Uthappa would be walking back. Gambhir adds one more. Uthappa seems to have a liking for ending the over with stunning shots. This one was delicately placed past the keeper for four. Nehra had no chance there at short thirdman.

Gambhir survies! Pawan Negi comes in to bowl, Gambhir comes down the track and hits straight to the short cover fielder. The ball ricochets off the fielder’s hands and they run for a single, Negi had enough time to hit the stumps but misses. Couple on the next ball. Uthappa then plays in the air for one more. Gambhir comes down the track to the fourth ball and heaves in the cow-corner region for four. Cuts towards deep point for a single. Uthappa on the last ball is hit on the pads, loud appeal from the bowler, height is the factor says umpire Dharmasena.

Ashwin bowls h9is second over. Gambhir guides the first ball on the leg-side for a single. Big gap there, so the batsman always has a chance to place it and add one. Uthappa is making Ashwin wait a bit, he doesn’t look happy that the off-spinner is coming to bowl quickly. Ashwin is not happy at Uthappa’s complaint either. Picks a single on the fourth ball. Comes round the wicket to Gambhir and he delicately places it past slips for four. Clever shot. Adds a single on the last ball.

Stat: Robin Uthappa has completed 4,000 runs in T20s.

Gambhir taps the first ball from Mohit on the leg-side for a single. The keeper is standing up to the stumps for Mohit. Uthappa mistimes a drive on the up next ball, follows it up with a tap on the off-side to steal a single. Dhoni still looks tensed while Mohit seems to have settled in. Gambhir then waits and waits for the slower ball, cuts it towards thirdman for a single. 50 up for KKR inside the powerplay. Uthappa once again hits a brilliant shot. Perfect timing. Wasn’t a big gap between extra cover and mid-off, still managed to pierce it for four. Stumping chance on the last ball, but Uthappa is well behind.

Ashwin brought in early. Starts with a short ball and Gambhir pulls it straight to square-leg, missed an easy boundary there. The next ball comes in and Gambhir just opened the face of the blade, couple of runs there. Misfield on the third ball allows Uthappa one more. Two misfields from CSK so far. The batsmen are content placing in the gaps and picking singles. On the last ball, Uthappa played a superb shot for six. Just came down the track and punched it for a six over long-on.

First ball from Mohit was a slower one and Gambhir failed to read it but the next one was a slower short ball and he swivels it for four. Didn’t look too elegant but well played. Four more. Single on the next ball. He is living on the edge but Gambhir has got the runs. Mohit though looks tense. Fourth ball is played quietly to mid-off, next one is back of good length and Uthappa is hit on the pads, they steal another single. Gambhir finishes the over with another single.

First ball from Nehra is flicked by Uthappa towards fine-leg for single. The next one is a length delivery and Gambhir goes for yet another swing, the inside edge almost kisses the leg-stump before going past the keeper for boundary. He is living dangerously. Picks a single next ball. The fourth ball goes away and away from Uthappa, he almost nicked that one. Fifth ball is driven towards mid-off for no run. The last ball is bread and butter one for Uthappa, short and he hammers it past midwicket for four.

Mohit Sharma starts from the other end, pitched up and punched sweetly straight past the bowler by Uthappa. That teased the mid-on folder on its way to the fence. First boundary of the final. Picks a single towards thirdman next ball. Gambhir still tentative with his footwork, rooted to his crease. But Mohit thinks of infusing some confidence in to Gambhir with a pitched up delivery on middle stump, Gambhir swings it on the on side for four. He follows it up with a huge wide down the leg-side. The fifth ball is tapped by Gambhir towards square-leg and the sprint for two more. One more single on the last ball but the overthrow gives one more. 14 runs from that nervous over from Mohit.

Excellent delivery to start by Nehra. Comes over the wicket and beats Uthappa. The batsman played for the inswing and missed it. Next ball is driven towards cover and Brendon McCullum, commits a rare misfield, couple to Uthappa. He then taps the third ball towards thirdman for a single. First ball for Gambhir and he tentatively plays back to the bowler. Nehra beats Gambhir on the fifth ball. Bowls straight and Gambhir plays across the line, two noises there and the leg-before appeal is turned down. Gets off the mark. Uthappa adds one more on the last ball.

Dhoni: We don’t know how the wicket will play and then there’s the dew factor as well. But it looks better than last few games, how it will behave we have to wait and watch. As of now from the top it looks a very good wicket. We are playing an unchanged side.

Gambhir: I was looking to bowl first as well. We’ve Pat Cummins in place of Narine.

 On absence of Sunil Narine:

Gambhir: Of course it’s a big loss but then as professional cricketers you need to get over it and focus on the game.

Dhoni: It’s not really our concern. But I don’t think there’s anyone who can replace him. At the same time you want other individuals to step up.

Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s coverage of the Final between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Bangalore. I am Abhijit Banare and I’ll be bringing you the updates of the match. The match promises to be a high-scoring thriller, with two IPL powerhouses vying for the Champions League T20 (CLT20) 2014 trophy. Read the preview of the KKR vs CSK Final match here.

Kolkata Knight Riders will be severely handicapped without Sunil Narine, who was banned from bowing in the final. In fact, Narine was also withdrawn from the West Indies series against India, set to start from October 8. However, KKR will take hope from the fact that Kuldeep Yadav has looked like an extremely worthy prospect in the few games he has played. Along with Piyush Chawla, the spin woes that KKR might have faced in Narine’s absence have been somewhat addressed. Read KKR’s Likely XI.

Chennai Super Kings have a habit of raising their game in big matches, and are in a CLT20 final for the first time since their victory in 2011. While Dwayne Smith has not been in the best of form, Brendon McCullum and Suresh Raina have been explosive for the Super Kings. The likes of MS Dhoni, Faf du Plessis, and Ravindra Jadeja have been belligerent as well lower down the order. With the ball, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jadeja, and Ashish Nehra have all been excellent. CSK’s Likely XI.
