This is the very first match RPS will play in IPL, since they are one of the two new teams of the tournament along with Gujarat Lions (GL). Live Cricket Score: Mumbai Indians (MI) vs Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS), IPL 2016 Match 1 at Mumbai
And so ends an extremely lame and one-sided IPL match for the 2016 season. Ajinkya Rahane got a brilliant 66 not out off 42 balls, and made a very strong statement, he has been named Man of the Match. MS Dhoni takes his team off to a flier, and tomorrow we have Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) taking on the Delhi Daredevils. Signing off for today, bracing up for another 59 games to go before we get some cricket. I will leave you with Shiamak Unwalla’s account of this match: Ajinkya Rahane stars as Rising Pune Supergiants thrash Mumbai Indians by 9 wickets in IPL 2016 Match 1 at Mumbai

Live cricket score update | Rising Pune Supergiants 114/1 | Overs 14 | Ajinkya Rahane 54 (38), Kevin Pietersen 21 (14): SIX! Bang goes KP on the first ball with Harbhajan dropping it short! Live cricket score update | Rising Pune Supergiants 104/1 | Overs 13 | Ajinkya Rahane 52 (36), Kevin Pietersen 13 (11): Rahane gets a short ball which he puts well on the leg side for a boundary, raising his half-century. An appeal for a run out, but KP had made it in on time. Less than a run-a-ball for RPS. And DROPPED! A dolly spilled by Gopal and Rahane gets a lifeline!
Live cricket score update | Rising Pune Supergiants 96/1 | Overs 12 | Ajinkya Rahane 47 (31), Kevin Pietersen 11 (9): Harbhajan is hit for two runs on first ball by Rahane. KP collects two as well, shuffling in his crease and testing the man at deep fine leg. A mixup again, but KP is inside the crease on time. HUGE! He registers his presence with a massive hit over deep midwicket!
Live cricket score update | Rising Pune Supergiants 85/1 | Overs 11 | Ajinkya Rahane 44 (29), Kevin Pietersen 3 (5): Gopal comes on. KP hits to long on for a single. He tries to sweep but plays it on to his wickets! What a ball! Kevin Pietersen is welcomed on a ball that turns sharply into him, goes over the wickets by milimeters. Live cricket score update | Rising Pune Supergiants 57/0 | Overs 6 | Ajinkya Rahane 30 (18), Faf du Plessis 26 (19): No change in bowling as Bumrah continues. He starts with two dots, beating Rahane on one occasion. Is this Rahane? Have not seen him play like this before! A short ball is slammed towards long on and deep midwicket, ball drops short of the ropes! A MASSIVE MIXUP! What’s happening!? Rahane gets an inside edge, charges for a double, Faf responds with a single, but turns back to find the throw coming in sharp. But by then, Rahane is already there with him at the striker’s end! Buttler collects the ball, and he and du Plessis dart towards non-strikers! Buttler then throws the ball, but misses the wickets, and du Plessis makes a diving entry! Poor from Mumbai, as following it is Bumrah over-stepping the crease! SIX! A fuller delivery outside off, and du Plessis smokes it over cover! SIX again! A leading edge over the first slip and the wicketkeeper as du Plesiss tries to fend off a ball that came into him sharply!
Live cricket score update | Rising Pune Supergiants 37/0 | Overs 5 | Ajinkya Rahane 23 (13), Faf du Plessis 14 (17): Mumbai, Rohit and McClenaghan still looking for that effect which Ishant created earlier with the new ball. The batsman is beaten on the second ball. Beaten again! Du Plessis charges down but fails to connect. A sharp single brings Rahane on strike, who punches it so well past men at cover that you get reminded of the great Rahul Dravid. Fourth boundary for Jinks.

The fifth ball has width but du Plessis lets it go. A sharp single to end the over.
Live cricket score update | Rising Pune Supergiants 8/0 | Overs 1 | Ajinkya Rahane 8(6), Faf du Plessis 0 (0): McClenaghan bowls a full toss first up to Rahane, who plays it down the ground to begin the scoring with a FOUR. The next 2 balls are dot. Lucky! A short ball rises on Rahane, who gets a leading edge falling short of the man at point! Rahane was looking to flick it on the leg. FOUR! A boundary to begin and end the over, this time past the first slip. Pune need 114 to win off 114 balls.
Pune are out there on the field for their chase. They need 122 off 120 balls. Should be an interesting chase. Rahane and du Plessis to open!
So, Harbhajan Singh’s innings takes Mumbai Indians to a total with which they can fight. He batted brilliantly, using all his experience to keep picking boundaries and sixes off the bad balls. The highest total scored at Wankhede Stadium is 235 by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) against MI in the previous edition of IPL, thanks to AB de Viller’s 59-ball 133. de Villier’s blistering innings was studded with 19 fours and 4 sixes at a staggering strike-rate of 225.42. MI bowlers were reduced to a punching bag, including Jasprit Bumrah, who leaked 52 runs off his 4 overs. Such is the nature of the Wankhede track! One bad ball and the batsman will send it soaring over the boundary line. Considering the batting maestros both teams boast of, this is going to be a cracker of a contest.
Mumbai are one of the favourites to win the tournament. They are two-time and defending champions, and they will be one of the powerhouses of the tournament. Skipper Rohit Sharma was not in great form during ICC T20 World Cup 2016, but he has almost always prospered in IPL. Even last year in the final, it was his half-century that helped MI lift the trophy for the second time. Meanwhile, RPS skipper MS Dhoni has won the tournament twice as well, both times with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
RPS have some exciting players like Kevin Pietersen, Ajinkya Rahane, Faf du Plessis, Albie Morkel, Steven Smith, Irfan Pathan, Mitchell Marsh, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ishant Sharma, among others. Meanwhile, MI too have players such as Harbhajan Singh, Hardik Pandya, Mitchell McClenaghan, Corey Anderson, Lendl Simmons, Kieron Pollard, and Marchant de Lange.
